000K FOR WATER GLOSETS-.
Patented Jan. 9, 1883.
N. Pcrzns. mawuxm n xm Wnshmglo 'NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F.PIKE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE NATIONAL ANTI-SEWER GAS COMPANY, OF CAMDEN, NEW JERSEY.
COCK FOR WATER-CLOSETS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 270,334, dated January 9, 1883.
7 Application filed August 7, 1882. (N model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES F. PIKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (Jocks for Water-Closets, of which the following .is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings, whereiu [0 Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section of a cock for water-closet howls embodying my invention, the bowl being shown in elevation. Figs. 2 and 3 are detail sections of modifications. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of Fig. 3, and
1 Fig. 5 is a sectional View, partly in elevation,
of a still further modification.
My invention has relation to cocks or valves for the water-supply pipes of water-closets, wash-stands, 850., and has for its object to so construct said cocks that a small stream of I water willcontinuouslv flowtherethrough without in any manner affecting the operation of said cock when opened to pass the usual supply of flushing-water to the bowl.
My invention accordingly consists of a. cock having a minute aperture therein or otherwise arranged as hereinafter described,so thata continuous flow of w'ater may pass thereth rougu.
Relerring' to the accompanying drawings, A
0 represents the case or shell for the cock or valve 13, provided with a stuffing-box, G, a valve-seat, D, water inlet or Opening E,for attachment of thewater-supply pipe 6, and an outlet-opening, F, forthe flushingor otherpipe,
5 f, connected to the bowl of a closet, as shown at w. The valve B has a spindle or push-rod, b, and G is a spring for closing the same, located on and surrounding said spindle. as shown. Said valve is provided with a small opening,
40 B, in line with the opening d in seat D, whereby when the cock B is closed, as shown in Fig. 1, a continuous supply or small stream of water will pass through said opening at to the flushing-pipe f, and thence to the bowl to 5 provide a running-water seal therefor, as described in application filed by me October 5, 1851. Said cock is shown in said application and in others filed by me previously and subsequently to said first-named application; but it is not therein claimed per so, as I expressly stated that I reserved it for the subject of a future application.
In Fig.2[ have shown the opening B formed in the shell A. In Figs. 3 and 4said opening is illustrated as passing through the partition or valve-seat I), while in Fig. 5 such opening is dispensed with, andin lieu thereof the valve 13 is not permitted to seat itself on partition D, being keptslightly away therefrom by means of the pin g on spindle b abutting against the end a of casin g before val e B reaches its seat, thereby providing an opening or passage-way, f, for water to pass through to pipe F without specially boring or forming it in any of the parts of the cock. If desired, instead of making an opening, B, in valve B, a nick or slit may be formed therein to serve the purpose of said opening.
a I have shown myinvention applied to watercloset bowls; but the same may be used for lavatories, wash-stands, bath-tub traps, &c.
What I claim as my invention is-- 1. A cock for water-closets provided with two passage-ways, one larger than the other, the smaller of which is never closed, while the larger passage-way is adapted to be closed and opened at will, substantially as shown and described.
2. A cock for water-closets, & c., provided with two passage-ways, one of which is always open for the passage'of a continuous flow of water, while the other is adapted to be closed and opened at will for the passage of the flushing-water, substantially as shown and described.
3. A cock composed of acasing, a passageway adapted to be closed by a valve having an operating-stem and reacting mechanism, and an additional passage-way which is always open to permit a diminished continuous 0 flow of water through the cock, substantially as shown and described.
4. A cock for water closets, composed of a casing, A, seat D, having opening 01, spindle I), having pin 51 valve B, and reacting mech- 5 anism Gr, substantially as shown and described. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES F. PIKE.
