Be it known thatI, ABRAM N. PASMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, inthe county 0f Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Flush-Valves, of which the following is a specification. j
My present invention relates to that type of flush valves ordinarily employed with closets and adapted to be employed in any place where a predetermined flo-w of water is required at any given time.
The `object of myvpresent invention is the provision of a flush valve so constructed that the water supply, may be 'controlled and shut oii1 entirely within the flush valvebody, and also'one in which after the water has been shut off the operative parts of the valve may be entirely removedwithout disturbing the valve setting or the handle or push button` device employed to operate it. This makes it possible, as will be understood from the following description, to employ my improved iiush valve in direct conjunction with a closetror other device or to be placed in anyy position inaccessible to the room in which the closet `or other device is seated, and it will be further understood thatr a handle ,or push button for operating this flush valve may be alsoplac'ed in or near the valve itself or in any suitable or required position. Referring to the drawing, the flush valve comprising my present invention comprises a casing indicated at 10, which is made of any suitable metal, and, as is customary, is providedwith an inlet connection 11 andan outlet connection 12. The outlet connection 12 is ittedwith a clampnut 13, ,by which the flush valve is connected to a discharge vpipe and at the opposite end of the casing the same is providedwith a 'clamp nut 141, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described. L j k I/Vithin the casing 10, and concentric therewith, I provide 15. Y In this wall 15.5 there is an opening 16 communicating with Ithe yinlet connection` 11. The Vcylin-t drical wall 15 is open at its outer end and closed at its inner end, and at the outer end of the cylindrical wall I providev a seat 1S, the cylindrical wall 15 making provision for an.v inlet chamber 17.V
,VWithin the casing 10, there is a cylinder 19. j This is preferably open-ended and the diameter of the inner end is such that it will pass within the cylindrical wall 15 making a relatively tight joint therewith. The inner enduof .the cylinder 19 is provided with an opening 20 of the same Vdiameter as the opening 16 in the cylindrical wall l5, and aswill be apparent, the cylinder may be turned so as to cause the opening 20 toreglster with the opening 16 or to entirely close the opening 16 or gto vary the extent to which the opening 16 is opened to regulate and control the admission of the water from the inlet connection 1 1. The cylinder 19 is also providedwith an external iiange 21, the diamew ter of which is such that it passes and fits within the upper end of the casing l0 so as to maintain the cylinder 19 in its proper lateral position within the casing. r1`he cylinder 19 is also provided with a peripheral recess adapted to receive a washer 22 which, when the cylinder is in position, rests against the seat `18. Extending between the recess in which the washer 22 is placed and the fiange 21, the cylinder 19 is provided exteriorly with a series of longitudinal ribs 23. Interiorly the cylinder 19 is provided with a flange 211, the upper or outer eX- trelnity of which forms a valve seat which is indicated at 25, and immediately above the internal iiange24 the cylinder 19 is provided with a series of ports indicated at 26. In the cylinder 19 there are also provided ports indicated at 27, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described.
. Surrounding the cylinder 19, resting upon l the outer face` of the flange 21 and extending` between the outer walls of the cylinder 1 and the inner wall of the casing, I employ a washer 28. Also surrounding the cylinder 19, and within the spacebetween the same and the casing, is an I-ring 29, in which there are suitable ports 30. Above f the -lring there is another washer 31, similar i in all respects to thewasher 27S. The clamp nut 14: is so constructed that when turned down on the casing 10 it k( :lamps the I-ring' inA position between the yflange 2l andthe washers 28 and 31, so that a water tight joint is formed between these parts, and
also between theV cylinder 19, the washer 22 and the seat 18 on the wall 15, and, as will be understood, also secures the cylinder permanently in position within the casing. At this outer end, the cylinder 19 may be provided, as indicated, with a cap 32, there being a washer 33 between these parts to form a water tight joint between them, and that portion of the cylinder 19 which is exterior oi the clamp nut 14 may be provided with nut faces 34, by means of which, when the clamp nut 14 is loosened, the cylinder may be turned to adjust the opening 2O therein to the desired position relative to the opening 16. The casing is also provided with a Atapped opening, indicated at 35, which makes provision for an external communica tion with the annular space 36 between the casing and the I-ring 29. The ports 30 provide communication between the space 36 and the annular space 37, between the I- ring and the cylinder, while the ports 27 provide communication between the space 37 and the chamber within the outer end of the cylinder.
1.lVithin the cylinder 19 there is a piston 38. This pist-on, as is the case in other Hush valves for which I have obtained patents and made applications for patents, is provided with a depending stem, indicated at 39. In a suitable position surrounding the piston, I employ a cup leather washer 40, a spacer 41, a valve 42 and a lock nut 43, the `cup leather, spacer and valve all being maintained in position by the lock nut 43. The valve 42 is adapted to bear against the valve seat 25 and forms the inlet valve for the device, and within the piston 38 is an adjusting screw 44, by means of which the iiow of the water through the piston during its return travel is regulated. The lower or inner extremity of the depending portion of the piston is materially reduced in cross section, and on this reduced end of the depending portion of the piston, which is indicated at 45, I employ a sleeve 46. Suitably secured in the sleeve 46, is a valve 47 preferably connected therewith by a nut 48, and in the wall of the sleeve 46, I may provide an opening or port, indicated at 49. The extent of the movement of the sleeve 46 is limited in one direction by the nut 50, and in the other by the shoulder 51 on the depending portion of the piston.
As shown in the dotted lines in Fig. 1, the tapped opening 35 may be connected by a pipe 52 to a control valve operated by a push button 54, or otherwise, and the discharge from the chamber above the piston may be disposed of by passing through a pipe 55 to a closet bowl, a sewer connection or any other place.
In the operat-ion ot t-he hereinbefore described valve, the parts are normally in the position shown in Fig. 1. Upon opening the control valve by pushing` the button 54, the water or other liquid normally entrapped in the cylindrical chamber above the piston is permitted to escape through the ports 27,
through the space 37, through the ports 30, f
through the space 36, and thence to the pipe 52. The pressure above the piston having` the cylindrical wall and cylinder and the Y valve casing, to the outlet connection 12.
The pounding of the piston by being operated rapidly in working under high pressure is prevented bythe sleeve`46 land its valve 47, inasmuch as the valve 47 enters the opening in the internal flange 24 before the piston reaches the end. of its forward travel, and from this point on the piston travels slowly, due to the Vreduced area against which the water may act. This device also provides for an initial flow of water, as well as for theV regular flow, and is more fully described in my co-pending application, Serial No. 716,123, iled August 21, 1912, for Letters Patent for an improvement in flush valves. l Y
As will be understood, and as isthe 'case in all flush valves of the class to which this invention belongs, the piston is returned to its normal position by the flow from the inlet connection passing through the `bores of different diameters in the piston and its depending portion, Which flow is regulated by the position of the adjusting screw 44. Y I claim as my invention: 1. A flush valve'comprising a casing, a cylinder within the-casing and adjustable to position relatively thereto to control the admission of the operating liquid, a piston in the cylinder, means for releasingl the liquid normally contained in the piston above the cylinder, adjustable means for permitting an accumulation of fluid pressure above the piston to return the same to its normal position after it has been operated, and devices for simultaneously making a tight Y los joint between the casing and cylinder and permitting the escape of the liquid within that portion of the casing adjacent' to the in- Y let connection, the said cylindrical wall providing an inlet chamber, a` cylinder adjustable to position within thesaid casing and v cylindrical wall for opening and closingthe passage to the inlet connection, a piston in the cylinder, means for releasing the liquid normally contained in the cylinder above the piston, adjustable means for permitting an accumulation of fluid pressure above the piston to return the same to its normal position after it has been operated, and devices for simultaneously making a tight joint between the casing and cylinder and permitting the escape of the liquid Within the cylinder above the piston upon the actuation of the means for releasing the liquid above the piston.
3. A flush valve comprising a casing having an inlet and an out-let connection, a cylindrical Wall Within the casing and concentric With that portion thereof adjacent to the inlet connection, said cylindrical Wall providing an inlet chamber and having an opening therein to the said inlet connection, a cylinder adapted at one end to fit Within the said cylindrical Wall and being provided with an opening adapted to register with the opening in the cylindrical Wall to admit a liquid from the inlet connection to the said inlet chamber, and the said cylinder being also adjustable to position to close the opening in the cylindrical Wall to shut off communication betvveen the inlet chamber and the inlet connection, a piston Within the said cylinder, means for releasing the liquid normally contained in the cylinder above the piston, adjustable means for permitting an accumulation of fluid pressure above the piston to return the same to its normal position after it has been operated, devices for simultaneously making a tight joint between the casing and cylinder and permitting the escape of the liquid Within the cylinder' above the piston upon the actuation of the means for releasing the Water above the piston.

A flush valve comprising a casing having an inlet and an outlet connection, a cylindrical Wall Within the casing and concentric with that portion thereotl adjacent to the inlet connection, said cylindrical Wall providing an inlet chamber and having an opening therein to the said inlet connection, a cylinder adapted at one end to t Within the said cylindrical Wall and being provided withan opening adapted to register With theV opening in the cylindrical Wall to admit a liquid from the inlet connection to the said inl-et chamber, and the said cylinder being also adjustable to position to close the opening in the cylindrical Wall to shut 0H communication between the inlet chamber and the inlet connection, a piston Within the said cylinder, means for releasing the liquid normally contained in the cylinder above the piston, adjustable means for permitting an accumulation of fluid pressure above the piston to return the same to its normal position after it has been operated, devices for simultaneously making a tight joint between the casing and cylinder and permit-ting the escape ot the liquid Within the cylinder above the piston upon the actuation of the means for releasing the Water above the piston, and means whereby a tight joint is made between the cylinder and the said cylindrical Wall.
