Description
Patented Nov. I4, I899. J. H. LIEBER.
COCK.
(Application filed July 21, 1895.)
No. 636,8l9.
(-N0 Model.)
m III! UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
JAMES H. LIEBER, OF BOONVILLE, MISSOURI.
COCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 636,819, dated November 14, 1899.
Application filed July 21, 1 8 9 8.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES H. LIEBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boon- Water or other fluid under pressure, at the same time opening a drain for the same in the pipes to prevent its freezing and bursting them. This object I accomplish in the manner and by the means hereinafter fully described in detail, and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like reference-letters represent like parts in both of the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a central sectional view of same.
My invention-consists of the shell A, provided with screw-threaded openings a a, opposite each other, adapted to receive the supply-pipe and the service-pipe. A hollow cylinder B, with a smooth interior, extends ver-.
tically from'the top of said shell A to within .a short distance of the bottom and is secured to the inside of the shell A by solder or otherwise or made integral with said shell A. In the wall of said cylinder, opposite the opening a, in which the service-pipe is screwed, is an opening I), and there is no other way of communication between the service pipe opening a and the interior of said cylinderB and no Way of communication between the service-pipe opening a and the supply-pipe opening a except through the said cylinder B. At the bottom of said cylinder 13 is a small hole 1), from which a passage-way 17 leads to the supply-pipe opening a. At right angles to the supply and service pipe openings a a is an opening a through the walls of the shell -A and cylinder B, through which opening a? the fluid contained in the servicepipe will drain when the supply-pipe is shut ofi. The hole at the bottom of the cylinder B forms a valve-seat. The plug 0, of any suitable material, preferably leather, has a ball-socket c and is fitted in the cylinder Bin the usual manner. The plug 0 when turned down closes the opening 6 and opens the open- Serial No. 686,530. (No model.)
ing a and when turned up opens the opening I) and closes the opening a The operation of my device is as follows: The fluid being on and the plug 0 turned up, the fluid fills the service-pipe and is available for use. When it is desired to turn the fluid off, the plug 0 is turned down, closing the inlet from the supply-pipe and opening the drain, so that all the fluid in the service-pipe runs out.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A waste-cock consisting of a shell provided with a supply-pipe opening,'an inner chamber provided intermediate the top and bottom at the sides with a drain-pipe opening and a service-pipe opening, both registering with like openings through said shell, a channel connecting said supply-pipe opening and an opening in the bottom of said chamber, and means for operating the same, substantially as shown and described.
2. A waste-cock consisting of a shell provided with a supply-pipe opening, an inner cylindrical chamber provided intermediate the top and bottom at the sideswith a drainpipe opening. and a service-pipe opening, both registering with like openings through said shell, a channel connecting said supply-pipe opening and an opening in the bottom of said chamber, and means for operating the same, substantially as shown and described.
3. A waste-cock consisting of a shell provided with a supply-pipe opening, an inner cylindrical chamber provided intermediate the top and bottom at the sides with a drainpipe opening and a service-pipe opening, both registering with like openings through said shell, a channel connecting said supply-pipe opening and an opening in the bottom of said chamber, and a plug fitted in said cylinder in the usual way and adapted to close the opening at the bottom of said cylinder at the same time opening the drain-opening, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JAS. H. LIEBER.
