Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEg EUGENE M. MORRIS, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN GAS-COCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,442, dated December 9, 1873; application filed November 17, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE M MORRIS, of Baltimore city and State of Maryland, have invented a new and Improved Gras-Cock 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had `to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
. a al, the former connecting with the meter and the other with the service-pipe. B is the. valve, which works vertically and lits upon the seat a2. This valve I provide with a hollow stem, b, which passes through the bottom a? of shell, and into the dripreceptacle O, which is screwed to the shell and closed at bottom by means of a screw, n. The end of tube b is threaded, and screws into an endflanged block, D. Between the flange d and the shell bottom a3 is coiled about the tube a spiral spring, E, which holds the valve securely to its seat.' The tube b is closed at both ends, but provided with an inlet-aperture, b1, always above the bottom a2, and an outlet-aperture,
b2, below it only when the valve is on its seat. When the valve is opened the tube b is drawn up within the body of shell-piece a3, and the aperture b2 thus entirely closed, thereby pre.-
venting the escape of gas into the drip-receptacle C. The operation is as follows: As soon as the valve B is closed, in order to shut ott' the gas, any liquid in the chamber F immediately descends through thetube D into the drip-vessel O, whence it can be drawn ot't at suitable intervals by the removal of the screw fn.' By this device there is no opportunity afforded to the matters held in solution by water remaining in chamber F to make a deposit, which will work in between the tube I) and the body ot' shell-piece, or for the water in the bottom of chamber E to freeze about the tube.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a cock-valve, B, sub jacent chamber F, and drip-chamber O, ofthe projecting tube b, provided with apertures bl b2, one above and the other below the shell bottom (L2, as and for the purpose specified.
EUGENE M. MORRIS.
