VEGETABLE-SLICER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented NOV. 16, 1909.
Application filed July 21, 1908. Serial N 0. 444,569.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUsTAF LIBERT REEN- STIERNA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Edgewater, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Vegetable-Slicer, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates generally to that class of devices in which the object to be sliced is automatically fed forward to the slicing knife, and while it may be used for slicing any suitably shaped and proportioned vegetable or fruit, it is more especially intended to be applied to the slicing of cucumbers.
To the end of providing for the convenient slicing of vegetables or fruit of this general shape and proportions, my improvement consists in providing a V-shaped trough, of suitable length, in which is rotatably mounted a threaded shaft, upon one end of which is carried a slicing knife.
Surrounding the threaded shaft is a collar, adapted to slide freely thereon, upon which is pivotally mounted a jaw having an interior threaded surface adapted to engage the threads of the shaft. Upon this jaw is carried a pusher adapted to engage the end of the object to be sliced.
When the object to be sliced is properly placed in the trough in engagement with the pusher, and the shaft is rotated, the object is, with each turn of the shaft, pushed forward the distance between two threads of the shaft and, at the same time, the projecting end is cut off by the knife rotating with the shaft. When the slicing-is completed, the pusher is retracted by tilting it, so as to disengage the threads of the pivoted jaw from the threads of the shaft, when the collar can be readily moved to any desired point on the shaft. By this means fruit or vegetables can be cut into slices of uniform thickness as rapidly as the shaft can be rotated.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 of which is a plan view of a device embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on line 2-2, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an end elevation; Fig. 4 is a transverse section on line l4, Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a side view and Fig. 6 a sectional view of the traveling collar and threaded jaw with the pusher mounted thereon.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates the V-shaped trough, the sides of which should have such an inclination to one another that the object to be sliced will rest against and be supported by the sides, out of contact with the threaded shaft, B, which lies in the bottom of the trough A, and is rotatably mounted at its ends. The shaft B, is provided at one end with a handle I), and carries at the other a knife, C, which lies outside of and close to a shield, D, which is secured to the trough, A, at the end thereof. To the shield, D, is secured a discharge trough, E, into which fall the slices cut off by the knife, C.
Surrounding the threaded shaft, B, and adapted to move freely thereon, is a collar, F, on which is pivotally mounted an interiorly threaded, semi-circular jaw, G, arranged to engage the threads of the shaft, B. Upon the jaw, G, is carried a pusher, H, provided with means, as the intersecting thin blades, 71., h, for engaging the end of the object to be sliced. The device is provided with a jaw, K, and set-screw, k, or other convenient means for securing it to a table when in use.
The operation of the device is as follows: The cucumber, or other object to be sliced, being placed in the trough, A, and engaged by the intersecting blades, h, h, the handle, 6, is turned and, by'means of the engaging threads, the pusher is driven forward, so that the end of the object is projected from the end of the trough, A, beyond the shield, D. At the same time the end of the object to be sliced is cut off by the knife, 0. \Vith each rotation of the shaft, B, the pusher is moved forward the distance between two of the threads on the shaft, and a slice of the same thickness is cut 015?.
When the slicing is completed the pusher, H, is tilted forward, as indicated by the clotted lines in Fig. 5, so as to disengage the threads of the jaw, G, from those of the shaft, B, the collar, F, is pushed back a suit- 100 able distance, and the operation is repeated. What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a vegetable slicer, the combination with a supporting trough, the cutter, and a 105 threaded feed screw, of a collar loosely encircling said screw, a movable jaw connected to said collar by a pivot extending transversely with respect to the axis of the screw, and provided with a curved portion 110 of less extent than the periphery of the screw having threads thereon to engage those of the screw, fan'd a pusher located in said trough and rigidly secured to said jaw, whereby by tilting said pusher upon said pivotal connection said jaw is disengaged ronr said screw.
2. In a vegetable slicer, the combination with a V-shaped supporting trough, of a screw threaded shaft mounted rotatably in the bottom of said trough, a slicing knife rigidly secured to said-shaft at one end of the trough, means for rotating said screw a collar loosely surrounding the threaded portion of the shaft, a jaw secured to said collar by a pivotdisposed transversely to the axis of said shaft and provided with a curved threaded portion of less extent than the "periphery of the screw for removably en gaging the threads of the screw, a pusher located in the trough, rigidly secured to said jaw and disposed in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the screw, whereby by inclining the pusher to the axis ofthe screw, said jaw is removed from engagement therewith.
3. in a vegetable slicer, the combination with a V-shaped supporting trough, of a screw threaded shaft mounted 'rotatably in the bottom of said trough, -a slicing knife rigidly "secured to said shaft atone end of the trough, means. for rotating said screw, it collarloosely surrounding the threaded portiono'f the-shaft, a "jaw secured to said collar by a'pivotdisposed transversely to the axis of said shaft and provided with a curved threaded portion of less extent than the periphery of the screw for removably engaging the threads of the screw, a pusher located inthe trough, rigidly secured to said jaw and disposed in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the screw, and a plurality of thin intersecting blades projecting fronrthe face of the pusher for engaging the article to "be sliced.
4t. In a vegetable slicer, the combination with the horizontally disposed trough and a screw clamp secured thereto, for detachably securing it to a suitable support, a threaded shaft lying in the bottom of said trough and mounted 'rotatably in the ends thereof, a slicing knife secured rigidly to one end of said shaft, a handle rigidly secured to the other end of said shaft, a col- CLAR-KSON A.
