SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 278,827, dated June 5, 1883.-
Applieation filed March 13,1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES ScHREnLER, of Chambersburg, in the county of Franklin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in cutters adapted more particularly for cutting vegetables, fruit, and similar articles, the object of the same being to provide a portable device that will combine simplicity and economy in construction. with durability and efficiency in use. My invention consists in a revolving disk having aseries of cutting-knives secured thereto, the said disk being made of spring metal and so constructed as to adapt it to be adjust ed relative to the knives to regulate the depths of the cut of the latter.
My invention further consists in the combination, with suitable'driving gearing and rotary cutter, of a cover having pockets therein for the purpose of holding the articles being cut, and followers for pressing the articles against the cutters.
My invention further consists in the parts and combinations of parts, as will be more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is aview in plan of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional "iew taken through the drivingshaft. Fig. ais a perspective view of the rotary outtingdisk. Fig. 5 is a view in elevation of the under side of the same. Fig. 6is aview of the grinding-disk, and Fig. '7 is a view of another -form of cover.
A represents a base adapted to rest on a table or other suitable support, and B a standard rigidly secured thereto. This standard is provided at its upper end with the U shaped extension 0, the arms a of which form bearing for the shaft D, and also rests for the trough E, which latter is rigidly secured thereto by screws. The standard B is also provided with the lateral extension F, which latter forms a seat or bearing for the lower end of the revolving shaft G, the upper end of which terminates in the small bevel-wheel J, rigidly secured to the said shaft G. The shaft D is provided at its outer end with a crank, I and at itsinner end with the bevel -wheel J, which meshes with the bevel-wheel J, rigidly secured to the short shaft G. The trough E is circular in shape, and is provided with a discharging-spout, K, and with a semicircular bottom, L, which latter is situated on a. level with the upper end of the spout K, so as to enable the sliced or grated particles of vegetables to be scraped therefrom into the spout.
M. is a circular rotating disk rigidly secured to the S-shaped rest 0 of the shaft N. This shaft is supported in the sleeve H, which passes through the spout K, and is provided with an angular lower end adapted to rest in a similarly-shaped recess or cavity formed in the short vertical shaft G, or in the bevel-wheel J, rigidly secured to the saidshaft. The rest 0 is centrally secured to the shaft N, the upper end of which latter projects through the rotary cutting-disk for the purpose of enabling the latter to be easily removed from position when desired. This disk is provided with one or more cutting-blades, P, (preferably two,) rigidly secured thereto in the ordinary manner, and is preferably made of steel, andprovided with one or more cuts orslits, 0, (one for each knife,) running at or nearly at right angles to the cutting-edges of the knives. The opposite ends of the rest 0 terminate in front of theknives I and form bearings for the set "screws S, the upper ends of which are swiv eledto the disks immediately in frontof the cutting-knives. Thus it will be seen that by turning the screws in one direction the portions of the disk which have been nearly severed from the remaining portion thereof by the slits a will be elevated or depressed, thereby decreasing or increasing the knife-opening; By
this means I am enabled to cut thick or thinslices without moving the knives. To set the knives for any thickness of cut it is simply necessary to remove the cover and withdraw the cutting-disk from position. The thumb-.
screws are then turned to the right or left, and the disk is again ready to be replaced for .operation. The disk is provided on its lower face with the scraper S, which latter is adapted to move over thesemicircular bottom of the trough and scrape the cut or grated particles therefrom into the spout, from whence it falls into a suitable receiver.
The rotary cutting-disk M is protected by the cover '1, which latter is circular in shape and provided with two or more hooked-shaped catches, (I, adapted to engage. with the wedgeshaped lugs c on the trough E, for the purpose of holding it in position thereon. This cover is provided with any suitable number of pockets, U, into which the articles to be cut or grated are placed. Each cover can be provided with more than one pocket, which can be of different sizes and shapes to suit different kinds of articles. Thus on one side a large pocket can be formed for cabbage, while the opposite side or half can be taken up with smaller pockets adapted for smaller articles. A follower, Y), shaped to conform to its particular pocket, is placed over the articles being cut or grated and protects the operators fingers and prevents injury thereto, and also forms a cap or cover for the pockets. The rotating disk previously described is particularly adapted for cutting, while the disk \V (shown in Fig. 5 is adapted particularly for grinding cocoanut, horse-radish, and similar articles. \Vhen it is desired to substitute the grinding for the cutting-disk the cover is first unlocked and removed from position, which leaves the cutting-disk free to be withdrawn. This latter disk is then removed and the whole covered and protected by the cover, which is then secured in position.
In Fig. T I have shown a cover provided with a series of cutting pockets or molds of different designs, through which potatoes and other similar articles can be passed, preparatory to slicing them, for the purpose ofgiving the sliced pieces regular and fanciful shapes. These cutting pockets or molds are sharpened at their upper ends, and after the articles are pared they are forced therein by suitable hand plungers or followers and brought into contact with the cuttingdisk, which cuts the articles into regular and even slices. These molds can be made in various shapes-such as leaves, diamond shape, heart shape, ovals,
stars, and any other design to suit the fancy or taste of the purchaser.
My invention is exceedingly simple in construction, is durable and effective in use, can be operated by a child, can be manufactured at and sold at a small initial cost, and is espe cially adapted for family use.
It is evident that slight changes-in the construction and relative arrangement of the several parts might be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention; and hence I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction shown and described, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A rotary cutting-disk having one or more detachable cutting-knives secured thereto, the said disk being partly severed at or nearly at right angles to the .blades, and devices for elevating and lowering the portions of the disk in front of the knives for the purpose of regulating the depth of cut of the latter, substantiall y as set forth.
2. The combination, with a suitable standard, driving-gear, and a removable shaft, the latter provided with an S-shaped .rest, of a cuttingdisk secured to the said rest, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with a rcvol ving cutter, of a cover therefor provided with one or more pockets of the same or different designs, the said pockets having sharp upper edges adapted to cut or shape the article before it is sliced, substantially as set forth.

The combination, with a suitable stand ard, driving mechanism secured thereto, the trough secured thereon, and a vertical shaft removably connected to the driving-gear, the said shaftbeing provided with an Sshaped rest, of a cutting-disk constructed substantially as described, and devices for gaging the depth of cut, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination, with a standard, a rotary cuttingdisk, andatrough, the latter provided with the wedge-shaped lugs, of the cover having one or more pockets, and provided with the hookedshaped catches adapted to engage the lugs, substantially as set forth.
