Application filed February 29 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
1.9 it known that I, lums 0. iii-ms a citizen of the United States, residing at i iaseca in the county of Nose ca and S sic of Minnosota, have invented ccriiiin 11cc and useful Improvements in Counicrbaiai'icing Devices for ain es of which the following is spccification. v
This invention miatcs in general, to pumps of the reciprocating piston variety, and more psrticuiui'iy to pumps which are used on i'aiii'ns, either by hand or Windmill i3OWe1 to raise Water for general purposes; unci iis objcci is LO provide means for counterbalancing the weight of the movable parts comprising the piston, iis rod, and a portion of the weight of the water so that the ogcrstion will be rendered very light and cow.
To this end H3." invention con is in the construction ami coiiibinaiion of parts fonn ing'a pump hereinafter more fully described and particularly sci forth in iiicwiz im crence being bad to tho accompanying drawings in which Figure 1, represents a perspective View of the hand gimp according to my invention. Fig. 2, is a top View of the stationary springplatc. Fig. 3, is a View of the body of the same plots invcrtc. Fig. i, is El View of the i'ci'novabic portion of the some plcio iii-- vcrtcd. U is a top ViJW of the iipiici sprin qiiais with its chi; iping jaw in pc iizion LQIL ice. i3, is a top View oi csams with Lilo ciompirig jaw Qii) Fig. i", is on shown in Fig. 5.
Let nu ism}, 8, i'opi'csoni the body of a, pump Stud mi. by brace 9, and provided with s soon: 10 a haiuiie 11, and rod 2 A brac pivoicci the to dis or cud I up and poi-no; zi'ifiziciiii crook s; scl'iwi in the pump handle so that each plate could be slipped on to the end of lhe rod. This is a matter of great inconvenience, and especially so, when he pistoim'oii is alsoconmooted Wii'h a. windmill. To wabic ihesc plates to be put. in place wii'houi disconnecting any part of the pump otfachmcnts, I make each plate in two or more parts, 'ct these plaice cannot be (illpiifffidfs of each OililGll for the plate if); must be fastened to {he piston-rod and 01m the pisiommd to play freely through ii, To iiiis end, each piste is moo-o open iii] one cdgc and a removable provided to close Y itZ1 that opcning. 'iiie plate 18, mmc recesses 21, in iis under side ihc opening aiiii ihc cios which Fla-mimic to iii that 0pc; vidci Wiih lugs 24. to rest tho plate iii (ho recesses 21. is to be piacoci around the p of the poop; ti n it is to boi-cis-ii. a little and the ciosi gpiece 23, is to be inserted undci it into dis opening with its lugs 24, engaging the apcriurcs 3}, when the plate is permitted to rest upoii the pump. The pisiomrod will now ho iii ccioiiing which is larg cnom-l ii- 50 play freely iiicrcnj ii-o pixie 19, has :12; open lo iwwcii'c iiw is pro-' engage- )iatc 18, "(i on top mm 29., in row i.lt csc zc rcvoive. he neck and i'Hf-Lifi 1o ii-mom iiic boii iroiai in sci'zawrui c ao-n His 25 .0 pinto ii is sic 18} must permit Q eases? service on both round and fiat piston-rods, l the claims either the cap of the pun-i"; or the the apertures 25, 26, are made to fit near enough for practical purposes to both forms; and the clamping jaw 28, is made fiat on one face 32, and concave at 33, on the other face. In\ service the plate 18, being held firmly down upon the pump top by means of the springs, holds its closing piece 23, securely under it by means of the lugs 24:, resting in the apertures 21; and the upward pressme against plate 19, is resisted by the jaw clamped firmly upon the piston-rod 12 l t will be readily seen that, these plates thus adapted to be applied to the pump rod and to be removed therefrom Without disconnecting any part of thepump, is a matter of great convenience, especially to the salesman in introducing these counterlmlancing springs for use upon pumps that are already in service; because the plates may be applied and adjusted to counterbalance the springs so that their value may be shown in a few minutes. It Will be seen that when the piston-rod 12, projects'far enough above top of the bracket 13 may be termed the tsp of the pump. course it may necessary to furnish springs of different sizes and dif- 'ferent degrees of strength for large and small pumps but the plates as eommonly furnished are adapted for nearly the whole range of common pumps.
Having thus fully described my invent on, what l: believe to be new and desire to cure by Letters Patent, is the tollewiing:
In a pump, a reciprocating rod and eountel-balancing springs therefor; two plates for attaching these springs to the pump body; one of the plates being secured firmly upon the rod and the other plate resting upon a fixed. portion of the pump, this plate being open at one edge and having apertures in. its under side, and a closing piece fitted to the opening andv having lugs fitter to engage the said. apertures in. the plate.
In testimony whereof I Hill my signature in presence of two witnesses.
