PORTABLE CONCRETE-TILE MOLD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 9, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS M. WIL- rnou'r, a citizen of the United States, resid- April 1906, under No. 818727.
The object of the invention is generally to improve and simplify the construction of the mold and to provide improved means for locking the inner and outer shells of the mold in assembled position.
Further objects and advantages will appear in the following description, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification:1*igure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a tile mold constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View. Fig. 3 is aside elevation of a portion of the outer shell. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the tamping member.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
The improved mold forming the subject matter of the present invention includes an inner shell 5, and an outer shell 6, said shells. being spaced apart by a pallet 7 to form an intermediate molding compartment 8. The pallet 7 is provided with a depending rib or flange 9 which rests on a platform or support 10 so that the operator may readily grasp the edge of said pallet when lifting the pipe or tile. The outer shell 6 is preferably formed in two sections, pivotally connected at 11 thereby to permit said sections to be swung laterally to open and closed positions.
As a means for locking the pivoted sections of the outer shellin closed position, one of said shell sections is provided with spaced brackets 12 having perforated ears 13 formed integral therewith and provided with laterally extending guide fingers 14 arranged to embrace the upperand lower edges of corresponding brackets 15 carried by the mating shell section.
Slidably mounted in the perforations of the ears 13 is a vertically movable rod 16 carrying spaced hooks 17, the latter being provided with inclined or cam faces 18 arranged to bear against the correspondingly inclined faces of lugs or projections 19 extending laterally from the brackets 17 as shown. 1
The hooks 17 are provided with sockets for the reception of the rod 16, said hooks being locked in adjusted position by means of clamping screws 20 extending through the sockets of the hooks and bearing against the rod 16.
Slida'bly mounted .on the rod 16 beneath the upper hook 17 is a sleeve or collar 21 to which is pivotally connected one. end of a link 22, the opposite end of the link being pivotally connected at 23 with an operating lever-24E.
The operating lever 24: is pivotally mounted on a bracket, or support 25 carried by one of the outer shell sections so that when the free end of said lever is moved upwardly the link 22 will exert a vertical pull onthe rod 16 and thus cause the cam faces of the hooks 17 to engage the adjacent lugs or projections 19 and lock the abutting ends of the outer shell section in assembled position.
It is obvious that when the lever 24 is moved in the opposite direction, the hooks 17 will be disengaged from the projections 19, thereby to permit the outer shell sections to be swung laterally to open position.
The sleeve 21 is adjustable vertically of the rod 16 so as to vary the throw or movement of the hooks 17, said sleeve being locked in adjusted position by a clamping screw 26.
The locking mechanism for the inner shell comprises spaced horizontally disposed brackets 27 secured to the adjacent ends of said inner shell and is provided with lugs or projections 28 having oppositely disposed inclined faces 29 and 30.
Arranged at the rear of the over-lapping edges 31 of the inner shell is an operating rod 32 provided with oppositely disposed wedge shaped heads 33, the inclined faces of which bear against the adjacent inclined faces 30 of the lugs 28 and serve to force the over-lapping edges 31 of the shell apart when the rod 32 is moved in one direction, thereby to expand said inner shell and force the latter into engagement with the inner rim of the pallet- 7.
The heads 33 are threaded on the rod 32 and are each provided at their reduced end with oppositely disposed hooks 34: having inclined or cam faces 35 for engagement with the inclined faces 29 of the adjacent lugs 28 so that on the reverse movement of the rod 32 the inclined faces of the hook 34 will engage the lugs 28 and draw the overlapping ends 31 of the inner shell together so as to permit the ready removal of said inner shell from the interior of the molded pipe or tile.
A collar 35, similar in construction to the collar 21 is mounted for vertical movement on the rod 32 and connected through the medium of a link 36 with an operating lever 37. it will thus be seen that when the lever 37 is swung downwardly to the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the wedge shaped heads 31 will expand the inner shell and cause the latter firmly to engage the pallet'7, and when said lever is moved in the direction of the top of the mold the hooks by engagement with the lugs 28 will draw the ends of the inner shell together so as to permit the removal of said inner shell.
The opposite ends of the inner shell are preferably reinforced and strengthened by the provision of metallic bands or hoops 38, there being T shaped reinforcing bands 3. secured to the upper edge of the outer shell for a similar purpose.
Associated with the mold is aconical shaped cap or cover 4-0 provided with a marginal flange a l, which rests on the upper reinforcing band 38 of the inner shell. said zap serving to direct the concrete or other material to the molding compartment 8 when filling the latter.
In operation the pallet 7 is placed in position on the platform 10 and the inner shell clamped in engagement with the inner periphery of the pallet by pressing downwardly on the operating lever 37. The outer shell is then positioned on the support 10 and the lever 24 actuated to clamp the pivoted sections of said outer shell in engagement with the outer periphery of the pallet. The parts being thus arranged in assembled position the cap or cover is placed on the reinforcing band of the inner shell and the cement, or concrete shoveled into the molding compartment and t-ampcd with the tool indicated at 42, in Fig. --lof the drawings.
After the tile is formed the lever 24: is actuated to release the outer shell, and the lever 37 moved upwardly in the direction of the top of the mold so as to contract the inner shell, thereby permitting both shells to be removed from the molded product, which latter may be carried on the pallet 7 to the drying racks and allowed to stand until suiiiciently hard for use.
The cover 40 not only serves to direct the material into the molding compartment. but also forms a housing for the interior of the inner shell when filling the mold.
Havin thus described the invention what is claimed is z 1. mold including an inner cxpansiblc shell and an outer sectional shell. spaced apart to form an intermediate molding compartment, headed lugs secured to ill. adjacent ends of the inner shell, :1 rod having oppositely disposed wedge shaped heads operating between the adjacent lugs for ex pandil'ig the inner shell. and hooks carried by and having their free ends spaced from said heads and also arranged to engage the lugs for contracting said inner shell, the said hooks and wedge shaped heads engaging under the heads of the lugs.

A mold including an inner shell, a sectional outer shell spaced from the inner shell to form an intermediate molding compartment, brackets secured to one of the sections of the outer shell and provided with laterally extending lugs, perforated brackets sccnred to the mating section and providcil with guide lingers arranged to embrace the brackets of the mating section. a rod slid abl v mounted in the perforations of the ears. hooks extending upwardly in the same direction from the rod and provided with cam faces arranged to engage the lugs on the adjacent brackets for locking the sections ol' the outer shell in assembled position, an operating lever, and a link connection between the'operating lever and said rod.
