MOLD FOR MAKING TILE:
Patented. Sept. 26, 1905.
,. Applicationfiled May 26, 1905. Serial No. 262,514-
Be it knownthat LCHARLEs S. LARIMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sac City, in the county of Sac and State of Iowa, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Molds for Making Tile, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to provide an improved mold specially adapted for producing a tile that has onevend portion enlarged to admit the small end of another tile. of like shape and size to produce a joint as required in laying them in a ditch to produce drainage of land or a sewer connected with a cellar. I
My invention consistsin theconstruction', arrangement, and combination of parts, as
hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my top ofa tile in the annular chamber between claims, and illustrated in the accompanying.
drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical central sectional'view of my mold and shows the manner of connecting all the different parts. Fig. 2is a top view and shows the open top of the annular chamber through which the composition is passed for producing an enlarged end at the the two concentric cylinders.
The numeral 10 designates the inner nonexpansivecylinder, and 12 the'outer cylinder,
that can be opened at one side from top to bottom to be expanded. They are placedin concentric position upon a suitable base, and
the outer one is shorter than the inner one, so that the top portion of the inner one will serve as a guard in directing matter filled 'into the annular chamber to produce a tile .of uni form diameter from top, to .bottom before the attachments are applied to produce a top end portion of enlarged diameter.
It is obvious the two'concentric cylinders may vary in size and manner of construction, and I do not claim anything new in them except making the inner cylinder to extend above the outer cylinder.
To close the top of the inner cylinder, I produce a cover that can readily be detachably connected with its top, as shown in Fig. l, by means of metal disk 13, that is larger in diameter than the inner cylinder and that has an upwardly-projecting flange 14 and a central opening 15 and angle-irons 16 fixed to its under side to project downward to engage the inside of the top of the inner cylinder 10.
To close the topof the inner cylinder after the flanged disk 13 has been placed thereon, I
fix to. a cone-shaped cover 17 angle-irons 18.
at its lower edge and inside surfaceto engage the inside surface of the flange 14. A ring 19, fixed in the top ofthe cover, facilitates .6
handling it.
To produce an enlarged top of the annular I chamber, as required for enlarging the diameter of the top end of a tile, an enlarged cylinder section or hopper 20 is provided, with a flange 21 at its bottom projected inward and angle-irons 22 fixed thereto to engage the outside surfaceof the top of the outer cylinder 12, as required to fix it thereto by means of rivets or bolts 23, as-shown in Fig. 1.
To reinforce the top of thehopper 20', a band 24 has angle-irons 25 fixed to its ends to be connected by a screw-bolt 26 and a nut 27, as required to clamp the band tothe top of .the
point of elevation relative to the hopper studs '28 are fixedinthe band to project inward and to rest on the top edge of the hopper 20, as shown-in Fig. 1, to prevent overflow of material when filling it into the annular chamber.
In the practical use of my invention the of the top of the mold to receive material for completing the tile by pouring in plastic matter or tamping in. adhesive matter, such as sand and cement properly mixed. I
Having thus set forth the purpose of my invention, its construction, and manner of use,
the practical operation and utility thereof will be obvious to persons familiar with the art to which it pertains, and
- What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a mold for making tile, a disk having a central opening and an. upturned'flange at its circumference and angle-irons fixed to its bottom in combination with the top of the inner cylinder of the mold.
2. In a mold for making tile, two concentric cylinders and the inner cylinderextended above the topof the outer cylinder, a disk,
larger in diameter than the inner cylinder, having a central opening and an upturned flange at its circumference and angle-irons fixed to its bottom and a detachable coneshaped cover fitted to the flange of the disk.
3. In a mold for making tile, two concentric cylinders and the inner cylinder extended above the top of the outer cylinder, a disk larger in diameter than the inner cylinder having a central opening and an upturned flange at its circumference and angle-irons fixed to its bottom, a detachable cone-shaped cover fitted to the flange of the disk and a hopper larger in diameter than the outer cylinder fixed to the top of the outer cylinder.
4. In a mold for making tile, two concentric cylinders and the inner cylinder extended above the top of the outer cylinder, a disk of larger diameter than the inner cylinder provided'With a central opening and an upturned flange at its circumference and angle-irons fixed to its bottom, a detachable cone-shaped cover fitted to the flange ot' the disk, a hopper larger in diameter than the outer cylinder fixed to the top of the outer cylinder and a band clamped to the top and outside of the hopper.
5. A mold for making tile comprising two concentric cylinders and the inner cylinder extended above the outer cylinder, a disk, of larger diameter than the inner cylinder, having an opening in its center and an upturned flange at its circumference, a cone-shaped cover fitted to the flange of the disk and a hopper, larger in diameter than the outer cylinder, fixed to the top of the cylinder, arranged and combined to operate in the manner set forth for the purposes stated.
