Description

No. 810,343. 'PATENTED JAN. 16, 1906. J. McL. PETTYJOHN, CONCRETE BLOCK MOLD.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 29, 1905.
. W/TNE88E8. INVENTOR JOHN MFL. PETTYJOHN ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIOE.
JOHN MoLAREN PETTYJOHN,
OF TERRE HAUTE, INDIANA.
CONCRETE-BLOCK MOLD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 16, 1906.
Application filed May 29, 1905. Serial No. 262,855.
place of ordinary brick and heavy stone blocks, and has for its object to obviate certain objections to similar molds as now constructed, such as with some thereof the block must be removed by lifting or lowering action from the mold and with other forms there is much liability of marring the corners, &c., of the block when removing the mold from the block.
To obviate the objections stated and for other obvious reasons and objections, I have devised the new and improved mold shown in the accompanying drawin s and hereinafter fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved mold. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a transverse similar section taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention I employ a rigid frame or hopper A and hingedly secure thereto depending side walls B and end walls O. The side and end walls in the normal position shown by full lines in Figs. 2 and 3 form the box or mold proper into which the concrete mixture is placed, and thereby molded into shape. Obviously in forming hollow blocks suitable cores may be arranged in the box or mold proper, and it is further obvious that the inner sides of the walls B C may be faced to impart various configuration or exterior surface to the molded block.
In further carrying out my invention I employ a rigid frame D, which may be constructed of separate pieces secured together by suitable fastening devices E, such as common bolts or other desirable means. It will be noticed that the frame D is made adapted to surround the mold-box, leaving suitable space therebetween for the purpose appearing farther on. On the outer surface of the hinged side and end walls of the mold-box and near their lower edge I secure ears F, and I secure similar ears G, preferably, to the under side of the rigid frame D. The ears F G are connected by arms I-I, whose ends have hinge-acting attachment to the said ears, substantially as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, or by other approved means. I may employ handles I, located upon the frame D, to facilitate lifting of the mold, as will be understoodf The construction of my improved mold will be understood from the above description. In the use thereof the mold is placed on the ground or any desired base, leaving all the parts in position indicated by full lines in the several views of my drawings. At normal molding position of the several parts of my mold the side and end walls will be held against movement from closed or box form by bracing action of the arms H between the outer sides of the box-walls and the surrounding rigid frame D. It is obvious that the rigid or upper part A of the mold may be formed into the hopper shape illustrated or otherwise suitably constructed, adapted for hin ed connection thereto of the side and end walls of the mold-box. Now when the mold has been filled with concrete material and the same has properly set, 620., as will be under stood, it becomes necessary for use of the mold in forming another block to remove it from the block thus formed, and the same can be effectively done by simply lifting it by hand. As the mold is removed liability to mar-ring corners of the block is reduced to a minimum by the outward swinging action imparted to the side and end walls, (indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2 and by the arrows 2 in Fig. 3.)
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination in a mold, of a hopper, I
a mold-box formed by separable sides and ends, hinged at their upper edge to the hopper, means whereby the mold may be lifted from the molded block, and means connecting IOO the lifting means With the hinged sides and arms hingedly connecting the mold-box,sides ends of the 1n01d-b0X, whereby said mold-box and ends, with the surrounding frame, sub- IO sides and ends are imparted swinging action, stantially as described.
substantially as described.
2. The combination in a mold, of a hopper, JOHN A PETTYJOHN' a mold-box having separable sides and ends Witnesses: hinged at their upper edge to the hopper, a JAMES ALBERT PYKE,
rigid frame surrounding the mold-box, and l INGA F. HUBER.
