UNITED STATE PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM J. sLAoK, on LA GRANGE, INDIANA.
CISTERN.
SPECIFICATION firming part Of Letters Patent I l 0. 629,277, dated. July 18, 1899.
Application filed February 11 1899- Serial No. 704,197. (N model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. SLACK, of La Grange, in the county of La Grange and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cistern s, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable others skilled in the 'art to which it appertains to make the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
forming part of this specification,- in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a vertical section 'of a cistern provided witlrmy improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the bottom and sediment-collec-v tor for such cistern. Fig. 3 is a side view of the same. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of a cistern provided with a modified form of bottom and sediment-collector.
It is the object of my invention to provide cisterns with an improved attachment for removal of foul water and'sediment which c01- lect therein.
It consists of an attachment which is cast or otherwise formed with circumferential flanges to adapt it for forming a water-tight joiutwith the wall of the cistern and with a central depression or cavity which is of conical form to adapt it to collectythe sediment, and is also 0 constructed with a discharge-passage which communicates therewith at a central point,
as hereinafter more .fully set forth.
Referring in the first instance to Figs. 1, 2,
and 3, A indicates the side walls of the cistern,
3 5 which may be formed of anysuitable material, such as stone, brick, or cement. The bottom of the cistern converges, and the top a is provided with an inlet-pipe B. The conical bottom and sediment-collector G is formed 0 or molded of any suitable material having due strength and durability. It is provided with parallel circumferential flanges, forming a groove 0, which receives the adjacent edges of the walls A, as shown in Fig. 1, so-that a water-tight joint is formed. The saidbottom C slopes interiorly and is rounded at the apex, so as to form a smooth conical cavity or depression adapted for collection of sediment. Such cavity or depression is provided with a lateral discharge-passage c, which is curved apparent that if the cistern be tilled the water, being above the lateral arm of pipe D, will be discharged by siphonic action and that this will occur automatically and continue so long as the water is maintained at due height.
It is further apparent that by induction the sediment and foul water collected in the conical bottom 0 willbe drawn ofi through the pipe D and discharged from the cistern.
E indicates a pump-stock through which pure Water may be drawn ofi from the cistern.
1 show in Fig. i a modified form C of cistern-bottom and sediment-collector in which I the discharge-passage c is arranged exteriorly instead of interiorly, as in the preferred form of my invention before described. A discharge-pipe D is connected with the exterior passage 0 and extended upward outside of the cistern, as shown. Y
A screen F is arranged in the conical cavity of the cistern-bottom O and O, the same being supported upon and'suitably secured to the sloping wall of the same. This screen is necessary to prevent passage of any object or substance which would tend to choke the passage 0 or 0 What I claim is'- 1. A cistern attachment forming the bottom thereof and having a central, conical cavity,
or depression, a curved discharge-passage communicating with the center thereof, and an eduction-pipe that communicates with i such passage and extends upward to a point near the top of the cistern for use in drawing ofi sediment of foul water, as shown and described.
2. A cistern-bottom and sediment-collector constructed with a central, conical depression or cavity,a discharge-passage which co mmunicates therewith and extends upward through its adjacent sloping surface, and a pipe connected with such passage and extending up through the body of the cistern, for use in drawing 0E sediment, substantially as shown and described. i
- 3. The combination with the cistern-bottom and sediment-collector, having a central, conical depression, of a screen which rests and is secured upon the sloping wall of said bot tom, substantially as shown and described.
' WILLIAM J. SLACK.
