TRICK LUNG-TESTER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. HERD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middlesboro, in the county of Bell and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Trick Lung-Testers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in toys and more especially to a-trick lung tester, the primary object of the same is to provide a trick device whereby the demonstrator of the trick can easily and quickly deceive a person of the operation of the same.

It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction, efficient in practice, and one which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view, taken on line 38 of Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawing for a more particular description of my invention, the numeral 1 designates the body portion of the device. The body portion 1 is reduced adjacent its rear end. to form a mouth piece 2. The forward end is formed with a recess 3. An air passage 4- eXtends longitudinally through the lower portion of the body and allows free passage of air from the mouth piece to a wind wheel 5 mounted in the recess 3. I provide a movable member 6 for opening and closing the inlet opening 7 and the outlet opening 8 of the chamber 9, said chamber being arranged adjacent the forward end of the body portion 1. The movable member is disposed transversely in the body portion in an inclined position and permitted to slide freely therein. The said member 6 comprises an inclined body 10 having an angular inlet closure 11, disposed at the lower end thereof and is adapted to normally close the inlet opening of the chamber, by means of the spring 12. member is an oppositely disposed angular operating device 18 extending above the top of the body portion 1 in order that the movable member can be quickly and conveniently operated. Secured to the front face of the body 10, adjacent the closure 11, is a forwardly projecting bar 14, extending longitudinally through the chamber 9 provided at its free end with an angular outlet closure 15. Mounted in the chamber 9 is a pan 16, provided with a handle 17 for permitting the pan to be partially removed fromthe chamber for filling the same with flour or the like. The transverse movement of the pan is limited by means of the stud 18 riding in the slot 19 disposed in the bot tom of said pan. A shaft 23 extends transversely through the recess and projects beyond one of the side walls of the body portion 3. Mounted upon the shaft 23 is the wind wheel 5 and the spool 20. Secured to the outside of the body portion in rear of the spool 20 is a spool 22. A thread 21 leading from the latter mentioned spool to the former and adapted to rotate upon the spools when the wheel 5 revolves.

The operation of the device is as follows:The person demonstrating the trick holds the device and allows one finger to lightly engage the operating device 13 and blows in the mouth piece 2, in turn the wind wheel 5 revolves, revolving the spool 20 and unwinding the cord 21 from the spool 22, and by this movement completely leads the person to whom the trick is being demonstrated to believe that he has conceived the exact operation of the same. The demonstrator then gives the device over to the person to whom he had been demonstrating the trick, instructing to press hard on the operating device 13, which in turn opens the inlet opening 7 and the outlet opening 8 of the chamber 9, closes the air passage adjacent the wind wheel, and makes the contents of the pan, such as flour or the like, to be discharged from the chamber, into the persons face.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages and operations thereof will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains and while I have described the principal operation of the invention together with the device, I now deslre to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are within the scope of the invention.

Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new, is

1. A trick device comprising a body portion formed with an air passage and a chamber having an inlet and an outlet, a mouth piece, and means whereby the continuity of the passage is interrupted and the inlet and the outlet are opened.

2. A trick device comprising a body portion formed with an air passage and a chamber having an inlet and an outlet, a mouth piece, and means for simultaneously opening the inlet and the outlet.

3. A trick device comprising a body portion formed with an air passage and a chamber having an inlet and an outlet, a movable pan in said chamber, means limiting the movement of the pan, a mouth piece, and means whereby the continuity of the passage is interrupted and the inlet and the outlet opened.

4t. A trick device comprising a body portion formed with an air passage and a chamber having an inlet and an outlet, a movable pan in said chamber, a movable member, an inlet closure on said member, an outlet closure carried by the member, an operating device carried by the member whereby the continuity of the passage is interrupted and the inlet and the outlet opened.

5. A trick device comprising a body portion formed with an air passage, a recess and a chamber having an inlet and an outlet,amouth piece,ashaft extending through the recess and beyond one of the walls of the body portions, a rotatable element mounted upon the portion of the shaft within the recess, a rotatable element mounted upon the shaft without the body portion, a rotatable element secured on the outside of the said body portion, a flexible element passing from one element to the other, a movable member carried by the body portion, an inlet closure and an outlet closure carried by said member, an operating device carried by said member whereby the continuity of the passage will be closed and the inlet and outlet opened, and a spring for automatically opening the passage and closing the inlet and the outlet.
