IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification formi-ng part oi' Letters Patent No. 923,853, dated Augustv 17, 1501)..:v
ful Improvements in Plows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and
. exact description thereof, referencebeing had te the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in so constructing a plow as that mold boards, points, or landsides made `of different materiolsferof differentr shapes and angles, may be attached'to lthesameplow, to adapt it to the different kinds vof plowing.
In accomplishing this object great diiliculty has been experienced where the handles have been in any way connectedwith the mova- I 'For instance, it wiii be readily seen that in case the farmer desired to lremove his cast-iron mold board and attach one made or" cast-steel, any'slight variation in the angle or curve of the latter would prevent its fitting up snugly to the handles.v .To obviate this vdifliculty If make the cast-iron beam the basis of attachment to all the other parts of the plow, sot-hat all these parts are entirely independent oi' each other, and hence can be removed and replaced by others of a different shapewithout interfering with each other, or with the general character of the plow.
Inorder to enable others skilled 'in the art to which my ,invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a side view of the plow, showing the landside; and Fig. 2 is a view of the.
other side of the plow, showing the' moldboard.
A represents a cast-iron plow-beam, of flat form perpendicularlyand curved form longitudinally, and having a flange, a, projecting on both sides, along the entire upper edge, and another flange, b, projecting on both sides along its lower edge. Along the bottoni edge of the plow-beam A is a shoulder er oiiset, c, for the attachment ofthe landside B, and the iiange bis suitably cut out, so as to allow the front edge ofthe landside to lproject slightly in front of the same'. The landside Bis, onits inner side, provided with a small block, d, which rests ou the shoulder @when the laudside is secured to the beam. The front part ofthe beam A. has alat surface for the attachuent ol' the share and mold-board.
brace, the'. ends of which rest in sockets'i V, one ou the side ot' the beam and the other on the-under side ol' the mold-board. The share I), which is slitablycut out ou its under side, so as to admit-the l'ront point ol' the beam, has,.on its top and lfront, a groove,
in which the lower end ot' thevcutteihbar l4 is inserted. The cutterbar '.ll runs back through a dovetailed opening iu the trout flange, I1, ol' the beam, and rests ou a raised surface or shoulderhf, on the laudside o l` the beam. itis 'lhstened by a boli, y, iu rear of the front ilange, l, aud'also with a three-cnr nered wedge, 11 or piu in the dovetail.
For the purpose ol attachiugthe handles to thebeanl, there is a groove ou each side nl" the-upper rear portion ot' the beam, through which grooves the handles areto extend down on the itat portion of the beam. They are pivoted at the shoulder by a Abolt passing| through, and are secured at. their lower ends at any angle desired by means ot' a bolt pass ling thrugh a curved slot, m, in -the beam. On each side of this curved slot are sharp' p ro jections a n, which holdl the Vhandles at any point desired.
v Having'thus fullydescribed my invention,
what I claim 'as new, .and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isy l. So constructing a metal plow-beam as that itis made the basis ol' attachment l'or all the other parts of the plow,.and that these parts, when so attached, are independent ol' each other, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The yplow-beam A, constructed as described, and provided with ilanges rt and (r, shoulder or oii'set c, raised surl'aee or shoulder f, curved slot m, and projections a a, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of January,
, EPHRAIM BALL, Ju.
