IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS;
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No- 92,69, dated July 20, 1869.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, T. E. O. BRINLY, of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Flows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, inwhich- Figure 1 is a perspective view ofmy improved plow as it appears when mounted upon its stock for use. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, showing the helve or standard to which the mold-board and share are attached, with the .means of 'such attachment, and showing also the manner of attaching the stock to the helve or standard. Fig. 3'is a rear end View of the plow, showing the strengthening-ribs upon thestandard and the chilled or hardened heelpiece upon the same. Fig. 4. is a side elevation of the standard, with a subsoil-share and mold-board attached thereto, and showing also a projection upon the side of the helve or standard for securing the same thereto, and the bolts which secure it in position. Fig. 5 is a plan or top View of the subsoil-share and its point. Fig. 6 is abottom view of the same, showing the recess therein for the reception of the projection to be formed upon the helve or standard. Fig. 7 is afront view of the furrow-turning mold-board and share, showing where they are joined together. The lower end of this helve or standard is to be supplied with elongations upon its edges, which Will give it a form nearly corresponding to that shown in Figs. 2 and 4., its rear portion being supplied with a movable portion, f, which may be secured thereto by bolts, as shown in Fig. 4, it being made of chilled cast-iron'or of steel, and hardened to prevent rapid wear. Upon the outer surface of the helve or standard a flange, b, is made to project, as shown in Fig. 3, for the purpose of receiving the bolts which secure the mold-board and share to the I same. This standard will generally be made of cast-iron; but it may be made of wroughtiron or of steel.
D represents the mold-board, which I prefer to make of steel; but which may be made of iron, it being bent into the proper form and supplied with a hole or holes, for securing it to the projecting flange b of the standard 0.

By referring to Fig. 8, which shows the mold-board and share or point as constructed of one entire piece of metal, it will be seen that upon the bottom of the thickened portion thereof a recess or groove is formed, as shown at e in Figs. 6 and S, the office of which is to receive the projecting point of the front end of the helve or standard G, by which means the share or point is prevented from turning upon the standard when only one bolt is used to secure it thereto.
I11 Figs. 4, 5, 6, and 9 I have shown the helve or standard, which is constructed as above described, and as shown in the other figures, but which is to be supplied with a mold-board such as is shown in Figs. 4, 5, andfi, the object being to convert the plow into a subsoilplow by removing the furrow-turning moldboard and the share or point used in connection therewith and supplying their places with the device shown in Figs. 5 and 6. This slight change, which can at any time be effected in a few minutes, it will be seen, changes a plow which is in all respects adapted for ordinary plowing into one equally well adapted for subsoil plowing, which fact is regarded as of great importance and as constituting one of the advantages incident to my invention.
Another advantage resulting from my improved construction of a plow is that by providing the helve or standard with ribs to a, I am enabled to make the same much lighter, and thus to reduce the weight of the plow, which necessarily diminishes the force re quired in drawing the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The construction of the share or point E with its groove or recess 6, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The helve or standard 0 and the moldboards D, when so arranged as to be capable of being used as a furrow-turning plow or as a subsoil-plow, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The construction of the mold-board and share shown in Figs. 5, 6, and 8, they having the prolongations thereon, as shown, and the thickened portions extending along the under and upper surface thereof, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
