To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. SHANK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mont Alto, in the county of Franklin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in File- Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is a file book intended and adapted for use in connection with commercial systems, using sales-slips, for the purpose of filing and preserving such slips in convenient position and arrangement for showing the state of an account, and for finding any particular account, the book being indexed so that the slips belonging to any particular name may be readily found therein. The book is provided with leaves or folios made of comparatively stiff paper or card-board, and each leaf has one or more positions or places indicated thereon for the names of customers, each place being provided with means for holding sales-slips in position on the folios, said means, as illustrated, consisting of rubber bands attached to the leaves. When used in connection with duplicate sales slips the original slip will be given to the purchaser to be retained by him and the copy or duplicate will be retained by the merchant and will be placed in the proper position in the file book, to keep a running account, the old slips being removed and disposed of, if necessary, as fast as the account is paid.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the book with some of the slips in place. Fig. 2 is a cross section of the book. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section of one of the leaves or folios.

The file book or holder consists of a series of leaves 6 having index tabs thereon, as indicated at 7. These leaves are made of card board or stifi paper, and will be suitably bound together within a book cover 8. Between each leaf a stub 9 is bound in, in order to give sufficient space for the slips which will be attached to the respective leaves. Each side of each leaf or folio is divided by suitable lines into several spaces, four as shown, these spaces being preferably of proper size to receive a sales-slip 10 which may be the ordinary sales slip used by merchants. Each space of each leaf will correspond to a certain customer whose slips will be attached at such place. The means shown for holding the slips comprise rubber bands 11 each of which extends through a hole 12 made in the leaf or folio at the edge of the customers space, said holes being preferably provided with reinforcements 13 to prevent tearing of the leaf. The bands extend through the holes, to attach slips on both sides of the leaf, the ends of the bands being conveniently connected by small double hooks 14, whereby new bands can readily be substituted when the old ones break. The number of leaves will depend upon the extent of the business or the size of the book desired, and index tabs may be provided for any desired number of divisions.

In the use of the system, when a sale is made the original sales-slip will be delivered to the customer and the duplicate will be inserted in its proper place in the book, under the rubber bands 11, new slips. being added as fast as additional sales are made, all the slips being thereby preserved in convenient position for reference. And when an account is paid off the slips may be removed and destroyed as above indicated. Inasmuch as the leaves are bound together in a book, instead of being arranged on,

loose cards or the like, all the leaves will be held together and cannot be misplaced or lost, and there will be little danger of any loss of the account slips which will be confined between the leaves when thebook is closed. The file book can be used continuously, the slips of new customers being applied to new spaces or to old spaces as fast as the old customers drop out. The slips of a customer whose name begins with a certain letter will, of course, be attached to the leaf or folio bearing that index letter.
