To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, S UIRE L. CARTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tonieville, in the county of Larue and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Presses, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to presses for compressing tobacco and other products and has for its object the provision of apress of the lever-actuated-plunger class having a handactuated lever for actuating the compression lever connected with the free end of the compression lever by means of a link, uprights being provided on each side of the two levers with oppositely disposed holes to receive pins or bars, one to engage the end of the hand lever to act as a fulcrum, and another to engage the compression lever and hold it in a compressing position. In addition to the uprights and bar for holding the compression lever in a compressing position 1 provide screw for engaging the lever and holding it.

My invention will be described in detail hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawing which is a side view of a press involving my improvements.

1 indicates a base for my improved press upon one end of which is secured two spaced apart uprights 2 braced as shown at 3 and provided with alined holes a to receive a pin or bar 5 to engage one end of compression lever (3 and act as a fulcrum for the lever.

7 indicates a hogshead in which the tobacco is being compressed by means of plunger 8 engaged by lever 6.

9 9 indicate uprights on the base 1 adja cent to the free end of lever (3 and provided with series of alined holes 9 to receive a pin or bar 10 to engage the top of the lever and hold it in a compressing position.

The lever (3 is actuated by means of a hand operated lever 11 connected to lever 6 by means of link 12 and fulcrumed on pin 13 secured in two alined holes 9* in uprights 9.

It will be understood that the hand lever 11 will be placed in two of the holes 9 and its free end swung downwardly swinging lever 6 therewith. Pin or bar 10 is then placed in alined holes 9* just above the lever G and the hand lever 11 then adjusted in holes 9 lower than the first holes used and the operation repeated. This is continued until the tobacco is compressed as much as desired.

14 indicates a screw rod mounted on standard l5 and engaging hole 16 in lever 6.

17 indicates a hand nut engaging the threads on screw rod 14 and used to depress the lever 6 in conjunction with the hand lever 11 described above or may be used alone and to the exclusion of said hand lever.

18 indicates an eyebolt secured to the end of the lever 6 to engage a hook 19 or other securing device on rope 20 to raise the end of the lever when the compression is completed.

I have described my press as applied to use in compressing tobacco for shipment but it will be understood that it is also applicable to use in compressing other products such as cotton, hay, straw and the like and to expressing cider, wine, etc., so that I do not limit myself to use in compressing tobacco but reserve the right to apply it to any use to which it may be put.

Having thus described my invention what I claim is 1. In a press, a suitable base, uprights secured to said base, a compression lever adjustably fulcrumed on said uprights, other uprights secured to the base adjacent to the free end of the compression lever, a hand lever adjustably fulcrumed on the last mentioned uprights, a link connecting the compression lever and the hand lever, a screw rod suitably secured to the base and engaging the compression lever, and a hand nut engaging the threads of said screw rod and the lever.

2. A press comprising a suitable base, uprights secured to said base, a compression lever adjustably fulcrumed on said uprights, a compression plunger engaged by said compression lever, uprights secured to the base adjacent to the free end of the compression lever and having alined holes therein to receive a pin to engage the lever and hold it in a compressing position, a hand lever adjustably fulcrumed between the last mentioned uprights, a link connecting the compression lever and the hand lever, a screw rod suitably secured and engaging the compression lever, and a hand nut engaging the threads of said screw rod and the lever.
