IMPROVEMENT IN PRESSES'.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. E 9,@ E L dated March 30, 1858.
To all whom 71:! may concern;
Beit known that I, SIMON INGnRsoLL, of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of N ew York, have invented a new and useful improvement in the construction of cotton, hay, and other presses that require considerable range in the follower, as well as a progressive power, and also that require a portable and'compact press that can be used by hand or horse power, the novelty of which consists in the peculiar arrangement of the levers by which much space is saved on each end of the press-box, and also much room in its height, and allows the box to be made much stronger than' by the common mode, and of using the same or similar levers, Which saves the ends of the box from being slotted or left open, so that the levers can pass up and down when pressing; and I do declare that the following is a full, clear, andq exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed diagrams, makinga part of this specil'ication.

To enable others to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct my press-box inA any convenient forni that may be deemed best adapted to the work to be done, and attach my levers and beams, as hereinafter shown.

K is the bottom beam, on which the levers g g 7L h are pivoted, as shown at y y, Figs. l and 2. Beam K is fastened to the press-box by rods D D, which pass through end piece, A, Figs. I and 4, and secured by nuts on the bottom of beam K, as shown at B B, Fig. l.
g 7L g h are the levers, as shown in Figs. l and 2, pivoted at c c, and placed on opposite sides ofthe beams E and K on pins 1/ y.
E is the follow-beam, and F the followl board, board F being secured to beam E by bolts c e, beam E being fastened to levers g g bybolts y y, Figs. l and 2.
J is a sheave in beamJ K for chain I to reuder round, held by pin E', Figs. l, 2, 3. Chain I connects the levers gg, Figs. l and 2, by be ing fastened to the ends of levers g g by bolts Z Z, Figs. l and 2, said bolts being screwed into the ends of levers at D D'.
L is a rope fastened to bolt Z, Fig. 2, passing under sheave M up to windlass N, sheave M being loose on bolt F, which passes through the end of beam K and frame-piece A, Fig. 4, the windlass N being held in place by upright pieces T T, which are fastened to framepiece a', Figs. l and 4, The windlassN is provided With a ratchet-Wheel, O, Figs. 3 and 4.
P is the lever, and is provided with a paWl, X, Fig. 4, which, when lever P is raised, will drop of its own gravityinto the teeth of ratcl1- et-wheel O, and when lever P is depressed Will turn cylinderN and wind up rope L.
WV is a pawl, Figs. 3 and 4, which is fastened to press-box at f, Fig. 4, and drops in the teeth of ratchet O and prevents the wind-.

B is the top beam, and c the lid fastened to beam B, and hinged at H, Fig. l, so that it can be raised-and lowered'at pleasure. is fastened down by rods D D, Figs. l and 4, which pass over thebeam B to prevent it from rising. D D also prevent the bottom beam from lowering when pressing. y
U isa crank on the shaft of windlass N, by which the press, levers, and beam E are low'- ered after thebale is pressed.

Having thus described the different parts of the press, I will now describe its operation. Suppose follower E F tobe down, as shown by the red marks, Fig. l, to nearly a horizontal.

The lever l? must be dropped down by and the top lid raised to aver-tical position by liberating rods D D and pulling down the top lever, V, it turning on its hinges at II ISI, Fig. l. The doors Q, Fig. 4, are held byhooks S S S S, as shown. rlhe box `is now ready to be filled. lVhen this is done, the top lid is let down and secured by rods D D over the ends of the beam B, Fig. Li. NOW, by raising lever IJ pawl X will drop in the teeth of ratchet O, and by pulling down lever l? 'the Windlass N, Fig. 3, will turn and wind up the rope L, which, being fastened to the lever g at D",
- Fig. 9, by bolt Z, the connecting-chain I being fastened to the same bolt and passing round sheave .I to lever gat D,Will pull both levers at the same time in opposite directions and pass from D to D and from D to D, as shown in Figs. l and 2, which will place them in the-position as shown by black levers standing vertically in Fig. l, which will complete the pressing of the bale. The hooks S S SS must be raised and the doors Q Q, Fig. el, must be let down. The ropes or hooks`may be passed through the recesses R R It R R R and passed round the bale and tied or fastliberating the pawl X,.Which will leave the Windlass held by pawl fw from going back. Now, by taking hold of the crank u and lightly turning back Windlass4 N, the pawl w can be raised and thc Windlass reversed, and the follow-beam E and levers g f/ 7i h lowered three or four inches, which will liberate the bale. After the bale is taken out of the press, the crank u may be turned back, which will lower down the beam E and the levers g g h 7L to position shown by red levers, Fig. l, Which will complete the operation.
I am aware that levers similar to those used by me -have been used before in various Ways. I therefore disclaim them in and of themselves considered; but
