IMPROVEMENT |N (DIL-PRESSES.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. OHAD- wIeIt, of Edgartown, in the county of `Dukes and State oi' Massachusetts, have invented an improvement in presses to be used on shipboard for the extraction of oil from scraps or pieces of whaleblubber; and I do hereby declare that the same is fully described and represented inl the following specification and the accompanying drawings, letters, figures, and references thereof.

Through the middle of and within the box I arrange a long screw, B', which I so apply to the head ior end d of the box that it can not only be revolved on its axis, but be stationary so `far as an endwise movement of it is. concerned-that is to say, such screw is provided with a rin g-projection, c, which'is placed between the external surface of the end dand the internal surface of a cap or collar, 4f, that eneireles the screw and is fastened to the end, of the box. The screw works through aserewnut, C, to which a movable platen, D, is fixed, the said platen being similar in shape to the end ot' the box, and made tomove on guides or rods h. h h, arranged as seen in' the drawings. The screw is provided with a crank; E, or other suitable means of enabling a person to turn it or 4cause it to revolve. When put in revolution in the right direction it will cause the platen to move or be drawn toward the end d, and it' in the space between the said end and the platen scraps of whale-blub` ber be placed, they will be compressed so as to expel the oil that may bein them, which oil will run through the holes c c c, Src., and out of the press.

A s this press is designed to be used on board of whale-ships, it will readily be seen that from the uncertain character o f the whaling business it must often remain unused or out of use for considerable periods ot' time. Under such circumstances itis desirable to protect its working parts from rust as much as'possible, which rust-is sure to `ensue if the sea or salt Water is allowed to, .genou its metallic parts. 1
It is 'very essential to the easy working of the screw that it be kept well oiled, and if it is suffered to wallow inthe blubber this must always ,be the case, and it is thus rendered a vself-oiling machine, thereby obviating the necessity of a person attending to the same in the usual way, as well as ei'ecting fa saving of labor incident to such.

'not meaning to claim the combination of a screw-platen and box, but intending to limit my claim as above described.
