JAMES P. MCLEAN, 0F 'BitooKLYrnNnw- Yoan. Letras Patent No. 63,072, ma March 19, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN PISTON-ROD PACKIN G.
@In 'dgnult nannte in tigen tttas 'nteutanr making met nf tigt sulla.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY iCONCERN:
'Be it known that I, JAMES P. McLEAN, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a. new and 'useful Improvement inthe Modeof'l Packing Piston-Rods or shat'ting by steam introduced through the head of the cylinder into the stniing-box; and I declare the followingr to be a full,
clear, and exact description thereof, reference being' had to the accompanying drawings, which constitute and form a part of the specification, and are lettered to correspond therewith.
In order that the public may fullyunderstand the nature of my invention, and those skilled in the construe'- tion and mode of operating the st'eam engine, I will describe it as follows, to wit:
Figure 1 is a vertical section of an upright cylinder, with piston-rod R and stuiiing-box provided with two concave, N,'and convex, N, soft metallic or'other suitable rings, fashioned so that either section will it into and press each other horizontally against the piston-rod on one side thereof, and the back ot the' box on the other or opposite side.
Letter Cfis astrip or pad of corklrubber, Waste, or other iexiblematerial, placed between the rings N N. Letters-U U are steam `-ports or openings to admit the steam to pass into and against the under side of the lower Aring or packing N, which is provided with a groove,v O, to receive the steam or otherwise through the head of the cylinder. p
Figure 2 is an enlarged perspective drawing of soft ,metallic ring packing. These rings may be made of any suitable material that can be operated. by the steam without injury. The'advantage over-all ordinary packing for pistonrods or shafting, by the above, is, that the steam packs itself by means of the peculiar form of the rings N N', whiehrnay be fashioned, if thought b'est, by dividing the vertical square of the ring packing diagonally, as shown at Figures 3, 4, and 5, or otherwise formed so as to bear upon the piston-rod or shaft when operatedA by the steam or otherwise. And by the introduction of a flexible substance or bodyV between the rings N N I am enabled to relieve the rod or shaft R from too great a pressure (caused by the action of the steam) by the elasticity of the pad C. v
I am aware that piston-heads have been packed by steam operating upon lugs or .other devices arranged in the Ahead of the-piston, consequently I do .not claim packing the head'of the piston by steam', by means of lugs, Ste.
But what I claim asnew and useful., andl what I wish to-seeure by Letters Patent of the nited -States* of North America, isf v Packing the piston-rod o'r shafting R-of a steam engine with the steam, by means of the sectional rings N N', pad C C, and steam ports U U, constructed andoperated substantially as described and shown in the accompanying drawings.-
y In testimony whereotI hereunto subscribe my name in the presence oftwo'witnesses. l
JAMES P. l\IcI.|lilA[\T.
