HASP-FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CYRIL LOVELY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Webster, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hasp-Fasteners, of
. whichthe following is a specification.
This invention relates to a lock for sliding doors, and particularly to a lock for the sliding doors of freight cars.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive construction of lock which, when engaged with its. keeper, will hold the door securely closed and yet may be readily released when it is desired to open the door.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of aportion of tlie body of a freight car and portion of iform an attaching arm 5 and a locking armthe door thereof, showing the lock held in closed position by the improved lock. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on a plane above the lock and showing in full lines the door locked and in dotted lines the lock releasing operation. Figqi is a horizontal section on line 33 ofFigiTx Referring to the drawin gel designates portion of the side of a ireig 1t car and forming oneof the jambs of the doorway 2, which is adapted to be closed by the sliding door 3. On the jamb is a keeper 4, which may consist, as shown, of an ordinary vertically arranged staple.
The lock comprises an elongated strip of sheet metal bent=0r folded upon itself to 'free end of the arm is bent inwardly to provide a locking hook or projection 10 which is adapted to ride over and snap into engage- Specification of Letters Patent.

ment with the keeper. The connection between the locking arm and keeper is secure enough, through the spring action of the arm to prevent disengagement of said locking arm under the jars and vibration to which the door is subjected while'the'car is in transit.
A device is provided to retract or release the locking arm and comprises a lever 11 arranged to lie between the attaching and locking arms and is provided with a right angularly disposed U-shaped end 12 forming a pivot pin 13 and a retracting stem 14. The lever is preferably made of wire and the pin 18 is pivotally mounted in the loop or eye 9 and enlarged at its end, as at 15, to prevent its displacement. Normally the lever lies parallel with and. between the arms, but by grasping its free end it may be swung outwardly, thereby causing the steml t to engage the free end of the locking arm and force the hook thereof out of engagement with the keeper. 1
From the foregoing description, the construction and mode of use of my improved lock will be readily understood, and it will be seen that it is adapted for effective use and to be inexpensively manufactured.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:
1. A structure having a doorway, a keeper thereon at one side of the doorway, a sliding door, a locking arm secured at one end of the door and having a hooked free end to ride over and snap into engagement with said keeper, said arm being outwardly bowed throughout its length, and a pivotally mountedfelement on the door adapted to be operated ;to exert outward pressure on said bowed arm 'to release said hook from engagement with said keeper.
2. A structure having a doorway, a keeper thereon at one side of the doorway, a sliding door, a spring locking arm on the door having a hookctl free end to ride over and snap into engagement with said keeper, and a lever pivotally mounted upon the door and having a portion arranged to engage and release said free end of the locking arm from engagement with the keeper.
3. A structure having a doorway, a keeper thereon at one side of the doorway, a sliding door, an attaching plate on the door formed with an eye,. a spring leckin arm en the In testimonywhereof I afiix my signature door having a. hooked free en to ride over in presence of two witnesses.
and snap into engagement with said keeper I I I and a lever bent at one end to form a pix; B E 5 plvotally engaging said eye and a stem to en- Witnesses:
gage and release said free end of the locking HARMEnAs PAYAND,
plate frbm engagement with the keeper. J. C. ZAFLER POLVIN.
