PENHOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented oet. 26,1909.
Application filed March 19, 1909. Serial No. 484,387.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that l, CHARLES F. SEEMAN,
Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of lVashington, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Penholders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
rlhis invention relates to pen holders, and has specially in view an attachment therefor by means of which a pen may be removed from the holder without the fingers of the operator being brought in contact with the pen, thus avoiding the objectionable linger soiling incident hithertofore to the removal of a pen from a holder.
In carrying out the objects of the invention as generally stated above it will, of course, be understood that the essential features thereof are susceptible of changes in details and structural arrangements, but a practical and preferred embodiment of the same is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a central vertical longitudinal view of a pen holder showing the improved pen ejector' applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view, the pen being removed. Fig. 8 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 8-3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the stationary sleeve for holding the pen holder handle. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the spring sleeve which cooperates with the operative position.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, 1 designates the handle of the improved pen holder which may be of the usual or any preferred type and material, the reduced end 2 of which has a snug fit within a socket 3 of a stationary sleeve 4, the upper forward portion of which is provided witli a slot 5 which is open at its front end. The socket 3 is of smaller diameter than the forward portion t, and at their junction an exterior abutment shoulder 6 is formed between which and the junction of the reduced end of the handle and its major portion a slide-way 7 is provided upon the exterior surface of the socket 3.
A slidable sleeve S surrounds the sleeve .l and its socket 3 and at its inner end the same is provided with an inwardly projecting annular iange 9 which contacts with the abutment shoulder 6 to limit the sliding movement of the sleeve 8 in one direction, and with the abutment formed on the handle to limit the movement in the opposite direction. Said sleeve 8 is also provided with outstanding annular flanges 10 and 11 at its ends which serve to retain a coating of cork, rubber, or other suitable material on the exterior of said sleeve, so as to provide a soft, cushioned, handhold 12. A lug 13 projects from the forward portion of the sleeve 8 and extends through the slot 5 and also through asimilar slot kor opening 14 between the ends' of a split spring Sleeve 15 fitting within the sleeve 3. The spring sleeve l5 serves to hold the pen 16 between the two sleeves 15 and 3 with its end in position to be struck and forced outwardly by the lug 13 of the sleeve S and thereby ejected from the' pen holder.
lt will be seen from the foregoing that by means of the slidable sleeve 8 and its ejector lug it is possible to eject the pen from the holder without contact of the fingers with the pen, and through the described slotted sleeve and the spring sleeve which has the opening between its ends held in alinement with the slot in the sleeve 3, ample clearance space is provided for the movements of the ejecting lug so that it will have a positive contact with the pen.
I claim as my invention 1. A pen holder comprising a stationary sleeve having a slot formed in one end and a guideway on its other end portion, a split spring sleeve within the stationary sleeve and having its opening in alinement with the slot formed in the sleeve, 'a sleeve slidably mounted on the stationary sleeve and provided with a pen ejecting lug which projects through the slot in the stationary sleeve and the opening of the split spring sleeve, said slidable sleeve being also provided with a flanged end which surrounds the guideway of the stationary sleeve.
2. A pen holder comprising a stationary sleeve having a slot in one end portion and a handle-receiving socket in its other end portion, of less diameter than the slotted portion of the sleeve, a spring sleeve within the slotted portion ofthe stationary sleeve, a slidable sleeve having an inwardly projecting annular flange at one end which surrounds the reduced portion of the stationary sleeve, and a pen-ejccting lug carried by the slidable the handle-receiving portion beingA sleeve and projecting through the slotted l portion ot' the stationary sleeve.
3. A pen holder comprising a stationary sleeve having an open-ended slot formed in one end and with an intermediate abutment shoulder, a split spring sleeve wit-hin the stationary sleeve below its slotted portion, a slldable sleeve mounted on the stationary vsleeve and. provided with an end flange which contacts with the abutment shoulder of the stationary sleeve to limit its movement in one direction, and an ejector lug carried by the slidable sleeve and projecting into theslotted stationary sleeve.
4. A pen holder comprising a stationary sleeve and a spring sleeve between which the pen is held, a sleeve slidably mounted on the stationary sleeve and adapted to eject the pen from between the stationary sleeve and the spring sleeve, said slidable sleeve being provided with outstanding lianged ends, and
a hand hold retained on said slidable sleeve between said flanged ends.
5. A pen holder comprising a stationary sleeve having a slot-ted end and a reduced end, thejunction between the slotted endk Agi.
