Description

iuittd fbtatts c. W. TERP-EN1NG,' oF
GENEsE-o, ILLINOIS'.
Letters Patent No. 93,768,datecl August 17, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN' CURB-GRINDERS.
The Schedule referred to in these-Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, C. W. TERPENING, of Geneseo, in the county of Henry, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and improved Curd-Grinder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference My invention relates to machines for grinding curd,
and mixing the same with salt; and
It consists in an improved arrangement and combination of Vparts for the accomplishment of said object, as hereinafter fully described.
A, inl the drawing, represents a frame made of wood, or other suitable material, of two longitudinal side bars a, and a suitable number of cross-bars, b b.
This -frame is to be fitted upon a vat, B, so that it can be firmly locked and readily removed. The-crossbar b at one end has, therefore, downward-projecting arms c with inwardly-projectingpins el that iit into the sides of the vat, while ou the opposite end of the frame isa suitable wedge, key, set-screw, or cam, e, for locking the frame over the ends of the vat, as shown.
One of the end cross-bars b may be made adjustable longitudinallyon the bars a., so as to adapt the frame to vats of different length.
O represents yone ofthe grinding-disks. It is made of wood, or other non-corrosive material, and ismounted upon a wooden or other shaft, D, which has its bearings in one end cross-bar b of the frame, and in another movable cross-bar, b1, of the same. he shaft D can move with the bar b1, and slides then through the end cross-bar b.
E represents the other grinding-disk. It is fastened to a plate, j', which has a horizontal notch, whereby it is fitted upon a cross-bar 1),lof the frame A, a rubber scribed.
spring, g, being interposed between the front edge ot the bar h2 and the plate f.- y
The disk E supports a hopper, F, and is ou the sides an d bottom surrounded by a forward-projectiu g flange, h, that embraces the disk G, as shown;
The lowerend of the plate f is, by a rod, yi, braced toa cross-bar, b, ot' the frame.
Upon the faces of the disks C E are fitted the grinding-bars ll, which may be alternately long and short, as sho\vnor of other suit-able arrangement. They are bevelled to one side, and form sharp edges on the other.-
Vhen rotary motion in the right direction is, by
vhand or otherwise, applied to the shaft D, the bars of thevtwo disks will be moved lwith the hevelled edges toward each other, and not with the sharp edges, as in ordinary mill-burrs.
It is not so much theobject to cut the eurd as it is to agitate and blend it with the salt.
The spring g allows the disk E to vibrate during the rotation ot' the disk G, so as to make the hopper selffeeding.
rlhe prepared grinders through au aperture, m, of the disk E.
The curd to be treated is put intol the hopper, and the shaft is then revolved, thereby grinding and mixing the contents of the hopper.
The ilange h serves to retain the curd between the grinders as long as the sameis not discharged through the aperture m.
The cross-bar b1 can be adj usted more or less distant from the end of the frame, by means of wedges ln, or otherwise-,so as to hohl the disks more or less close together.
Haring thus described-mvinvention,
What L claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is Y The combination of the longitudinallyadjustablev disk C, oscillating disk E, hopper F, tlange h, and spring g, with the frame A, all constructed, arranged, andy operating substantially as herein shown and de- C.
