Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 19, 1909.
Application led April 3, 1908. Serial No. 424,952.A
in Toys, of which the .following is a specification.
This invention relates to a toy designed to be used for producing a noise or report l/soinowhat like that of a pistol or irecracker without, however, employing an explosive so that the usual dangers o f fireerackers or other pyrotcchnic articles are avoided.
The invention lhas for one of its objects .to-
provide a toy of this character which is coniparatively easy and inexpensive to manufacture, readily manipulated by a child,- and `affording -considerable `amusement and entertainment. i
A further object ofthe invention is the provision of a toy in the nature of a hollow body having a Vibrant head such as rubber, raw hide or the like on which acts a striking element whereby a loud report can be produced, the said element being a resilient n' member disposed across the head and adaptin the claims appended hereto. l In the accompanying drawings, which ed to be drawn outwardly latter and then released so the head.
vWith these objects in view and others, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises theyarious novel features of construction and arrangement .of
0r away from the parts which willbe more fully described.
` hereinafter and set forth with particularity illustrate certain 'of the embodiments of the invention, Figure l is a perspective View of the toy. Fig. 2 is a centralA vertical section thereof. Fig. 3 is a'plan view of the body. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the striking element. F ig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view showing the .striking .element in raised,
position with respect'to the head of the toy. Similar reference characters are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout the severa-1 views.
Referring to thedrawings, s ra tubular body or barrel made of wood, paper, metal oi' other suitable material and formed at its upper end with a bead 2 and having immediately below the same' an annular groove 3, the lower end -ofl the body as to strike against y l designates being closed by a bottom piece 4 fitted thereto. Stretched over the upper open end of the body l is a vibrant head 5 of raw hide, rubber, metal, paper or the like, which is in the form of a disk of suoli diameter as to entirely cover the .top of the body and enter the groove 3 thereof, there being a band 6 eX- y tending around the head to retain the marginal portion of the latter in the groove.
Extending transversely over the head 5 is the striking element 7 which may be a strip ofV rubber or other elastic material and arranged with its extremities inserted under This element may be provided' the form of an ordinaryfirecracker. In the A presentinstance, the striking element 7 is so designed as to produce two rapidly succeedfing reports, and for this purpose, the elastic strip is divided longitudinally by a slot 9 and the lower end of the stern is formed into bifurcations each connected with. one half of the elastic strip. One bifurcation is slightly longer than .the other as shownin Fig. 5, so that it will strike the head when the stem is released a short period before the other bifurcation, thus producing two reports. The stem 8, 4which may be of rubber, has the longer bifurcation reduced at 11 so that this bifurcation will be more readily compressed when thelstriking element bears lon the head and thus permit both bifurcations to lie in the saine plane to insure the stem'S- remaining in an kupright position.
In using the toy, the body 1A is held in one hand while the stem` 8 is grasped by the other handand pulled upwardly, as shown" inFig. '5 and in Fig. 2 by the dotted lines. The stem is then released so as to permit the striking element to contract and iy back against thehead 5, the bifurcations striking the latter successively so as to produce the reports.y Since the body l is hollow, the reports will be very 'loud and resemble somewhat tlie bursting of a-firecracker. A toy of this character is designed to afford considf erable amusement and entertainment to chil- .dren and is of compartively durable and substantial construction so that itl-will 'not be easily broken.
'F rom the foregoing descriptionftaken in connection With the accompanying drawings,"the advantages of the construction and of thepmethod of operation `will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and While-I havedescribed the principle of operation of the invention, together with thedevice which I now 4consider tov be the 'best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the devicei shown is merely'illustrative, and
that such changes may be made when desired as are Within the scope of the claims.
- Having thus `described the invention, what 1. A toy comprising a hollow body having an open end', a vibrant head stretched over the open en'd and secured to the body, a rubber strip extending across the head with one ofitsflat faces normally in contactwith the latter, saidstrip being secured at its ends to the body, fand a stem on theside of the strip opposite from vthat in contact with the head and 4integrally connected with the strip to l form a pulldevice whereby the strip can be drawn away from-'the head and released to 310 strike-the latter. .l
2. A toy comprising ahollow body having an open end and a peripheral grooveadjacent such end, a vibrant head stretched over the open end of .the body' and having its marginal portion confined inthe groove of the body, a fastening band extending around the body and engaging the 'said marginal portion of the head to `hold the same in the groove, anelastic strip ext/ending across and normally vin contact with the outer'surface of the head and having its ends held in the groove by the fastening band, and a stem on the elastic member and extending outwardly at right angles thereto from the side opposite from that in contact with the-head to forma pull device for stretching the member in the operation of the toy.
'3. A toy 'comprising a hollow body, a vibrant head stretched across the end of the oppositesides of the slit.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature in presence of two witnesses.' i
