UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES P. LEYNER, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO JOI-IN GEORGE LEYNER, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
VAGINAL SYRINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 19, 1909.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES P. LEYNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vaginal Syringes, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to improvements in vaginal syringes, and the object is to provide a syringe having a simple and easily operated device for closing the orifice through which the syringe is filled, and the object is further yto provide a syringe which is adapted to direct streams toward the side of the vagina as well as toward the mouth of the womb in order to effect a thorough cleansing of the parts.
Other objects and advantages will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved syringe. Fig. 2 is a section taken one line 2-2 of Fig. 1 showing the syringe filled with the water. Fig. 3 is a section taken in the same plane as Fig. 2, showing the syringe inverted in position to be filled. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail section taken on line 2*-2 of Fig. 1,.
clearly illustrating the manner of closing the inlet orifice. Fig. 5 is an enlarged plan section taken on line 5--5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the clamp. Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail longitudinal section of the outlet end of the tube.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings, 10 is a flexible receptacle preferably formed of rubber and provided with an inlet orifice 11 which may be surrounded by a rib 12 to strengthen the edge of the material. Adjacent to the inlet orifice 11 are two ribs 13, 13 extending transversely of the receptacle 10 and preferably entirely therearound on the exterior thereof. Two ribs 14, 14 extending transversely of lthe receptacle 10 and located in the interior thereof are preferably arranged in aline- Inent with the ribs 13, 13, respectively. A clamp 15 extending transversely of the receptacle 10 is located between the ribs 13, 13 and preferably consists of a piece of wire bent to form a helical torsional spring 16 of iiexible rubber.
having two free ends, one of which is bent to form a hook 17 into which the other free end 18 is adapted to be placed. The spring 16 is arranged to spread the free ends of the clamp 15 apart when the end 18 is released from the hook 17. In the opposite end of the receptacle 10 is inserted a coupling 19 which serves to connect a tube 20 to said receptacle, said tube being preferably formed The tube 20 is provided with two lugs 21, 21 located adjacent to the point of connection of said tube with the receptacle 10, said lugs being for the purpose of placing the fingers against in introducing the syringe for use. The tube 2O is provided with a longitudinal passage 22, a
portion of which adjacent to the outlet orifice 23 thereof decreases in cross sectional area toward said outlet orifice, said orifice beingv preferably flared outwardly somewhat. The tapered portion of the passage 22 just described is provided with a screwthread 24 which is adapted to impart a whirling or rotary motion to the fluid passing therethrough. In order to direct streams toward the side of the vagina, I provide a plurality of transverse passages 25 leading from the longitudinal passage 22, said transverse passages being preferably located out of alinement with each other.
The syringe hereinbefore specifically described is filled in the following manner. The clamp 15 is first removed by releasing the end 18 from the hook 17 and withdrawing said clamp from its position between the ribs 13, 13. The syringe is then inverted, as shown in Fig. 3, and the tube 20 is bent upwardly as shown in said figure, thereby collapsing the receptacle 10 adjacent to its point of connection with said tube. The opposite edges 26, 26 of the receptacle adjacent to the outlet orifice 11 are then pressed toward each other with the thumb and finger and the receptacle is then filled with water. The orifice 11 is then closed by slipping the clamp 15 transversely thereof between the ribs 13, 13, pressing the free ends of said clamp together and finally hooking the end 18 onto the hook 17, thereby acting to force the opposite sides of the ribs 14, 14 into contact with each other to tightly close the inlet orifice and prevent the escape of the fluid. When the clamp is in place the ribs 14, 14 are compressed somewhat by the clamp and are adapted to prevent slight leakage of fluid which might otherwise take place were it not for the provision of these ribs. The receptacle 10 when thus closed constitutes a bulb which may be squeezed to discharge the water and said water passes outwardly through the transverse passages 25 as Well as the orifice 23, the screw-thread 24 acting to impart a whirling or rotary motion to the central streani and theoutwardly flared orifice acting to spread the same into a substantially conical forni.
Having thus described my invention7 what I claini and desire by Letters Patent to secure is:
l. In a syringe, a flexible receptacle provided with an inlet orifice and an outlet orifice and having two interior ribs extending thereacross and having also two exterior ribs extending thereacross, all of said ribs being located adjacent to said inlet orifice, and a clainp located between said exterior ribs and adapted to hold opposite sides of said receptacle in contact with each other to prevent the escape of fluid from said inlet orifice.
2. In a syringe, a flexible receptacle pro-` vided with an inlet oriice and an outlet orifice and having two interior ribs extending thereacross and having also two exterior ribs extending thereacross, said interior ribs being located Vopposite said exterior ribs, respectively, all of said ribs being located adjacent to said inlet orifice, and a' clamp located between said exterior ribs and adapted to hold opposite sides of said receptacle in contact with each other to prevent the escape of fluid from said inlet orifice.
3. In a syringe, a receptacle, and a tube connected thereto, said tube provided with a longitudinal passage increasing in cross seetional area from its outlet orifice toward said receptacle and provided with a transverse passage leading from said longitudinal passage.
l. In a syringe, a receptacle, and a tube connected thereto, said tube provided with a longitudinal passage increasing in cross sectional area from its outlet orifice toward said receptacle and provided with two transverse passages leading from said longitudinal passage, said transverse passages being located out of alinenient with each other longitudinally of said tube.
In a syringe, a receptacle, and a tube connected thereto, said tube provided with a longitudinal screw-threaded passage and a plurality of transverse passages leading from said longitudinal passa-ge.
G. In a syringe, a receptacle, anda tube connected thereto, said tube provided with a longitudinal passage having a screwthreaded portion and provided with a plurality of transverse passages leading from said screw-threaded portion.
T. In a syringe, a receptacle, and a tube connected thereto, said tube provided with a screw-threaded passage having an outf'ardly flared orifice.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set niy hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHAR-LES P. LEYNER. lVitnesses Louis A. JONES, Sapin V. MCCARTHY.
