ORRIOR L. THOMPSON AND ERNEST R. MORRISON, OR TIDIOUTE, PENNSYLVANIA.
BREAD-BOX.
Specification of Lettersl Patent.
Patented Oct. 12, 1909.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that we, ORRIOE LAVETTE THOMPSON and ERNEST E. MORRISON, citizens of the United States, residing at Tidioute, in the county Of Warren, State of Pennsylva` nia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bread-Boxes; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to bread-boxes and has for its object to provide a receptacle of this character including a water compartment for preserving the freshness of the bread.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of the box.V Fig. 2 is an end elevation. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal view through the box, and, Fig. t is a detail view of the knife.
Referring to the drawings, the numerals 5 and 6 denote respectively the front and rear walls of the box and 7 the ends o f the same. The box is divided by means of a partition 8 into upper, middle and lower compartments indicated respectively by the numerals 9, 10 and 10 respectively. By means of a partition 11 which serves as a floor for the compartment 10, a water com` part-ment 12 is formed in the bottom of the box below the floor 11. The compartment 9 opens through the top of the box and a cover 13 is hinged to the said box and arranged to close the said compartment. The com` partment 10 opens through the front of the box and also through o-ne of the ends of the box, a door 14 serving to close the front opening and a door 15 being arranged to close the side opening. The partition 11 is provided with a series of perforations 16 and the compartment which is formed by the said partition and the bottom of the box is adapted to be filled with water by means of a suitable spout 17 which is closed by means of a cap 18. The side opening in the box forthe compartment 10 is located adjacent the front of the said box and is of less height than the said compartment 10, a shelf 19 be ing disposed within the said compartment on a line with the lower edge of the said open` ing. Adjacent its upper end the compartment 9 is provided in its sides and ends with a series of openings 20 which allow for ven` tilation of the box.
Pivoted to the .end of the box as at 21 at the forward lower end of the end opening in the same is a bread-knife including a blade 22 having an arm 23 by means of which the said knife is attached to the said box. The blade 22 is curved from t-he arm 23 and is provided at its free end with a handle 24 which extends at right angles laterally from the said blade. The knife here shown is merely indicative of any form of knife and the same forms no part of our invention but simply shows a suitable fo-rm of knife to be used with the invention.
It will be seen from the foregoing that by resting a loaf of bread upon the shelf 19 so that it will extend through the opening in the end of the box and slightly beyond the said end, and by swinging the knife across the said opening, the bread will be sliced. It will furthermore be understood that the water in the compartment 12 will preserve the freshness of the bread and cake contained in the compartment 10.
What is claimed is:
In a bread box, a bread receptacle provided with a door in the front thereof, a water receptacle beneath said bread receptacle, a foraminous partition between said bread receptacle and the water receptacle, a shelf held above the foraminous partition in spaced relation thereto and extending across 'the door Opening near the top thereof, and
means wherethrough a loaf of bread may be projected for cutting comprising a lateral delivery door at the end of said shelf and having its bottom edge in alinement with the shelf.
In testimony whereof, we afiix our signatures, in presence of two witnesses.
