p CURTAIN-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented 00. 12, 1999.
Application filed April 27, 1909. Serial'llo. 492,502.
This invention relates to curtain fasteners,
and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a simple and durable fastener for securing one or more curtains to a pole without the use of pins or similar fasteners that would tend to injure the curtains; second, to provide novel hold-fast means fora curtain that can be used in connection with a tubular metallic pole or solid cylindrical wooden pole, third, to provide a strong and y. durable fastener that can be easily and quickly adjusted upon a curtain pole to maintain the curtain in a draped position; and fourth, to provide a curtain fixture that will present a neat and attractive appearance. rlhese and such other objects as will hereinafter appear are obtained by a fastener that will be presently described in detail and 'hen specifically pointed out in the appended claims, and reference will now be had to the drawing forming a part of this specification, wherein there is illustrated the preferred embodiments of my invention, but it is to be understood that the structural elements thereof can be varied or changed as to the shape, proportion and manner' of assemblage without departing from the spirit of the invention.
in the drawings :-li`igure 1 is a plan of a cylindrical metallic pole provided with the fasteners, liig. 2 is a plan of a portion of an ordinary wooden pole provided with the fastener, Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross sectional view of a tubular pole shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross sectional view of a wooden pole shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the fasteners, and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a portion of `a modified form of fastener.
ln the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a plate circular in plan and V-shaped in vertical cross section, said plate having the upper and lower edges thereof provided with apertures 2. 3 designates a coil spring having the ends thereof extending through the apertures 2 to hold said spring in engagement with said plate.
4 designates a yoke-shaped fastener member made of wire, said member having the ends thereof bent to provide eyelets 5 and then bent in the openings 6 provided therefor in the side edges of the plate 1 for maintaining said member in engagement with said plate. In connection with the member 4 a clamping member is used, said clamping member being' formed of a single piece of wire bent to provide coils 7, an intermediate connecting portion 8, and rearwardly eX- tending parallel curved arms 9, said arms having the rear ends thereof bent to engage in the eyelets 5 of the member 4, and pivotally support said clamping` member relative to the said member 4.
10 designates a cylindrical tubular pole provided with detachable knobs or ornamentations 11. This pole is provided with a longitudinal slot 12 extending from one end thereof to the opposite end, and the ends of the slot are adapted to be closed by the knobs or ornamentations 11, whereby fasteners used in connection with the pole cannot become accidentally disengaged from the ends of said pole. lVith the knobs or ornamentations removed, the springs 3 of the fasteners are placed in the pole with the members thereof protruding from the slot 12. The springs 3 when placed in the pole 10 are compressed and are under tension suiiiciently to bear against the inner sides of the pole 10 and normally hold the fasteners liXed relative to said pole, but permitting of said fasteners being adjusted to support a curtain in the desired position relatively to the pole 10.
13 designates an ordinary cylindrical wooden pole having detachable knobs or ornamentations 14. In this instance, the coil springs 3 encircle and frictionally grip the periphery of the pole 13 and the tension of said springs is adapted to support the fasteners in a horizontal position.
Another modilication of the invention is shown in Fig. 8 of the drawings, wherein the ends of the member 4 are bent inwardly, as at 8, and then coiled, to provide a spring 3a which can be used in connection with either a metallic or wooden pole, similarly to the spring 3.
' As shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5 of the drawings, the coils 7 of the clamping member are adapted tov ride over the forward' edge of the yoke-shaped fastener member 4l and' bind the curtain 19 upon the coils 7 ofthe clamping member. The intermediate connecting portion 8 serves functionally as a hand gri-p; for elevating the clamping member and releasing the curtain 19. l
It is thought that the utility of the curtain fastener in connection `With either a metallic or Wooden pole will be fully understood, and I reserve the right to make the fastener of any suitable material, in order that the fastener Will harmonize With the finish of the curtain pole in connection With which it is used.
Having non7 described my invention what I claim as new, is n I. In a curtain fastener, the combination with a pole, of a plate, a coilv spring having the ends thereof attached to said plate and adapted toV frictional'ly engage said pole, a yoke-shaped fastener member carried by said plate, and a clamping member pivotally connected to said yoke-shaped fastener member and' adapted to engage the forward end of said fastener member for binding a curtain between said members.
2. In a curtain fastener, the combination with a pole, of a coil spring adapted to frictiona'lly engage said pole, a yoke shaped fastener mem-ber supported by said spring, and a clamping member pivotally connected to said fastener member and adapted to enesegesi.A
gage the forward end of said fastener mein' ber for holding a curtain between said menibei-s- 3.Y In a curtain fastener, the combination with a pole, ofa coil spring adapted to fricti'onallyengage said p'ole, a plate connecting the ends of said spring, a yoke shapedy l fastener member connected to said plate, and
a clamping member pivotally connected to said fastener member and having the forward end thereof coiled to engage the forward end of said fastener member and hold the edge of a curtain between said members.
el. In a curtain fastener, the combination with apole, of a coil spring adapted to fiicl tionally engage said pole, a plate connecting the ends of said spring, a yoke -shaped fastener member connecting with said plate, and a curved clamping member pivotally connected to said yoke andV having the for- Ward end thereof coiled to engage the forward end of said fastener member, said clamping member having an intermediate connecting portion serving functionally as a. handle for moving said clamping member, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
JEREMIAHv GRIZZELL.
