Snoentoz Witness a device of fingers in proper position w STEPHEN, 0. Donovan; or monn'ram'nomn, IDAHO.
THUMB-REST FOR rENoiLs AND THE- LIKE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, S'rnPHENO. Donovan, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mountain Home, in the county of Elmore and State of Idaho, have invented new and useful Lmprovements in Thumb-Rests for Pencils and the Like, of which the followin is a specification'.
'lhis invention relates to improvements in attachments for pens and pencils, and has relation more particularly to a thumb rest adapted to be used more especially on pensand pencils, but can also be use on surgical instruments, artists brushes, nut picks, hand corn-husker, and the like, whereby a person is ena-bled'to firmly grip the same without the assistance of the index fin r.
It is an obi'ect of the inventionto provide his character comprising a circular concaved face portion having integrall formedwith theback portion a clasp \vhici permits the thumb rest to be readily and quickly applied or removed from the pencil and also allow the attachment to be regulated for different sized hands.
Another object of the inventionis to pro vide a device of this character which is simple in construction, eflicient in practice and one which can be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With the'above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of-construction and in the arrangement and-combination of. parts to be hereinafter [more fully described and claimed.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in' the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of a pen, with my improved attachment applied thereto. view. Fig. 3 is a view artly in section, and Fig. 4 is anelevation of my improvement.
In the practice of my invention, I provide a thumb rest designed to kee the hand and liile writing or learning to write, and is preferably composed of'thin metal or aluminum, but which may be composed of hard rubber or'any other desired substance; Referring to the drawing for amore partlcular description, numeral 1 denotes the Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed Jul 1 5, 190;. Serial No. 443,674.
Fig. 2 is a transverse SGCtlOIlfll' pressed face member 2, so formed as to receive the thumb and make it possible to rest the index finger. Projecting laterally and formed integrally with the convexed back 3 spring jaws 4. and 5, so constructed as to resiliently engage a pen or pencil, as more plainly shown in F 1g. 2, whereby the rest can be readily. and quickly applied or reregulation of the rest on the pen or pencil.
As indicated in the drawings the body portion of the attachment is substantially circular inelevation. The lower portion of the concave face 2 is spherical to fit the tip of the thumb, and said spherical concavity merges into an up er or rear portion, 6, which is substantia ly cylindrical to better accommodate the ball of the thumb. A device thus formed may be quite small and untended function. I
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompan ingdraw.- ings,tl1e advantages and operations thereof in the art ,to which the invention appertains and while I have described the princ1 al operation of the invention together wlth the device I now desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may-be made as are withinthe scope of the invention.
is claimed as new, is
The hereindescribed thumb rest for pens or pencils comprising a circular rigid body lower portion of said concavity being spherical and the upper portion thereof being substantiall cylindrical, and attaching means secured irectly to said convex back, for the purposes set forth.
