ABDOMINAL SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 12, 1909.
Application filed. November 14, 1908. Serial No. 462,674.
To all whom it may concern:
Be 1t known that I, JAMES S. ALLRED, a
' citizen of the United States. residin at III Troy, in the county of Pike and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Abdominal Support; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to a support for rupture either actual or threatened.
It often happens that one is threatened with rupture a good while before it is fully developed and one of the principal objects of this invention is to provide simple and comfortable means, whereby, the rupture may be kept in check when one is threatened with the same. Also this invention is designed for use where the rupture is fully developed. It is also'to be understood that this device is adapted for use by both male and female.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention shown applied. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through one section of the device showing a pad.
Referring to the drawings,1 designates a rod of metal which is approximately U- shaped and the upper ends thereof, are provided with outer curves 2. The U-shaped portion of the rod 1 is provided with a leather apron consisting of sections a and 6. These sections are independent of each other and are connected together by a lacing 3. The apron which consists of inner and outer sections, has arranged between them a copper lining 4. Instead of copper, any other suitable metal may be employed. The purl pose of this metal or copper lining is to provide a certain amount of stiffness to the apron and yet at the same time afford the desired amountof flexibility. It will also be understood that the thickness of the lining may be varied as required.
are designed for men can be provided with r a pad 5 connected with the inside of each of the sections a and b.
The device is connected to the wearer by means of a strap 6, which is connected with the apron portion and also a strap 7 which is connected with the ends of the rod 1. It will be seen that by tightening the strap '7. there will be a tendency to throw the apron portion inwardly.
What is claimed is 1. A device of the class described comprising an apron approximately U-shaped. a U-shaped rod connected to said apron and adapted to engage its bottom and sides. a strap connecting the apron with the wearer. and a second strap connected with the rod and adapted to force the apron upwardly and inwardly.
2. A device of the class described, comprising an apron approximately U-shaped, a U-shaped rod connected thereto and adapted to engage the sides and bottom thereof, a member for connecting said apron to the wearer, said rod being extended rearwardly of said apron on both sides of said wearer, and a second member connected with the ends of said rod, for drawing said apron inwardly.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES S. ALLRED.
