K. M. SANDVIG. PLASTERING. TROWEL. APPLICATION FILED Amm, 1909.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
KRISTIAN M. SANDVIG, OF BERTI-IA, NORTH DAKOTA.
PLASTERINGr-TROWEL.
To all lwhom it may concern.'
Be it known that l, KRisTIAN M. SANDVIG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bertha, in the county of lolette and State of North Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Plastering-Trowels, of which the following is a specification.
rThis invention relates to plastering trowels, and its object is to provide a novel construction and relative arrangement of the blade and handle whereby the trowel may be more easily balanced in use, and also to provide a novel construction ofresilient shank to secure flexibility in spreading and wiping without depending` entirely upon the resiliency of the blade.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which :n
Figure l is a perspective view of the trowel. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same.
ln accordance with my invention the blade l of the trowel is primarily made from a more or less resilient plate of isosceles triangular form, the rear or heel point of which between the base and rear side is cut away, as shown at 2, parallel with the front edge or side of the blade to produce a blade of trapezoidal form.
The handle 3 of the trowel is mounted upon the upper arm 4 of an elongated substantially U-shaped shank 5, the lower' arm G of which is provided with a downwardly and forwardly curved or bent extremity 7 which is united at its free end 8 in any suitable manner to the blade at the point of intersection between its base and the adjacent end of the edge 2. The arm 6 extends forwardly and upwardly at a slight angle over the rear half of the body of the blade in alinement with the forward end or point thereof, and is connected at its forward end with the arm 4 by the upwardly and rearwardly curved bight or connecting portion 9, so that the handle 3 lies suiiciently above the arm 6 to provide an intervening space l0 for the reception of the lingers of the hand of the operator grasp-y ing said handle.
Speccation of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 2, 1909.

serial No. 487,397.
By the construction described, it will be seen that a portion of the handle projects beyond the rear edge of the blade, while a portion thereof projects over the rear half of the blade, .thus enabling the operator to better support and more accurately balance the blade than is possible in those constructions where the handle is projected wholly beyond the blade or only extends to a slight extent over the same. The construction of the shank, the arm G of which lies above the blade, also leaves the upper surface of the blade free to take up a maximum amount of mortar, so that the capacity of the blade in this particular form is not impaired. The shank is formed in practice of spring wire or metal and by reason of its peculiar shape acts as a resilient bow or support for the handle, by which the ample flexibility of the trowel in spreading and wiping is secured without depending entirely upon the resiliency of the blade. Hence excessive wear of the blade in use is avoided, thus increasing its effective length of service.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new, is zl. A trowel comprising a blade, a resilient shank secured at one end to the heel of the blade and having a lower arm extending for wardly over the blade, an upper arm extending rearwardly above said lower arm, and a resilient portion connecting the front ends o-f said arms, and a handle mounted upon the upper arm.
2. The trowel comprising a trapezoidal shaped blade, a resilient U-shaped shank having lower and upper forward and rearwardly extending arms lying above and mainly over the rear half of the blade, said arms having their forward ends connected by the bight of the shank, and a handle carried by the upper arm.
In testimony whereof I afhx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
KRISTIAN M. SANDVIG.
litnesses R. G. DEVELYN, R. A. NoRDYn.
