JOHN E. IVIOYE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BAG.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 28, 1909.
Application filed September 29, 1908. Serial No. 455,237.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, JOHN E. More, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York,`
have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Bags, of which the following is a speclication.
l. y presen im en lon lea es to an 1mprovement in bags and has for its object aI f transversely through the bag frames, showing them in locked relation with the handle and key means in position to unlock them.
Describing now my improvements with particular reference to the devices of the drawings and reserving it to the claims to point out the novel features, l and 2 are the respective bag frames, the frame l being provided with openings 3 and having a downufardly extending lip 4t on its inner rThe other trame 2 has spring lugs 5 projecting from its inner edge and spaced apart to be located under the respective openings 3 when the bag frames are together.. Each spring lug 5 has an upwardly extending locking projection 6 adapted to pass under the lip 4 and to spring up in back of said lip to lock the frames together with the mouth of the bag closed.
On the bag handle 7 which ordinarily will be of flexible material, such as leather, are located pins 8 spaced apart to register with the openings 3. The bag is unlocked by pressing the pins S down through the openings 3 to simultaneously depress the spring lugs 5 to release their projections 6 from the lip el to permit the separation of the bag frames to open the bag. Thus it will be noted that there are a plurality of locking devices requiring a corresponding key means to open them and all of which must be unlocked simultaneously to permit separation of the bag frames. Accordingly assuming that a thief knew the method o? operation of the locking means and should attempt surreptitiously to open the bag by inserting a pointed implement down one of the holes 3, ne could not open the bag but would have to employ three implements held properly spaced apart and insert them all simultaneously to unlock the projections 6. As or course such manipulation in a surreptitious manner would be impossible, it follows that the bag is practically proof against pickpockets. On the other hand, it is perfectly easy for the owner to open the bag, since all that is necessary to do is to press the handle with the teeth directed downward into the openings 3 until the locking projections (5 are released from the lip fl and at the same time to pull on the tab 9 to separate the frames and open the bag. On the contrary to close the bag it is only necessary to snap the frames together.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim is l. In a bag having bag frames and a handle, one of said bag frames having a plurality of openings spaced apart and a downwardly extending lip, and the other bag frame having a plurality of spring lugs adapted respectively to be located under thc openings in the other bag frame when the frames are together, said spring lugs having locking projections adapted to spring up in back or' the lip when the bag is closed with its frames together; and unlocking pins on the bag handle spaced apart to enter the openings in the bag frame and depress thc proj ections on the spring lugs out of locking engagement with the lip.
2. In a bag having bag frames and a ilexible handle, a plurality of independently operating spring catches between the handle attachments to the bag and on one of said frames normally in position to interlock with the other frame, said catches being accessible through an opening in the frame to permit pressure to be applied to release the catches from their locking positions; and key means on the middle portion of the handle insertible through the bag frame opening to move all of the catches out of their locking positions.
3. In a bag` having bag frames, a plurality of independently operating spring cat-ches on one of said frames normally in position to interlock with the other frame, said catches being accessible through an opening in the frame to permit pressure to be appliedto release the catches from their locking positions g; key means insertble through the bag frame opening to release In witness. whereof; Ii hare. signed my name to the foregoing specification in the and unlock all of the catches; and. a flexible. presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
part attached to the bag and supporting the 5 aforesaid key means to permit of its beinggl carried to and inserted into the bag frame opening to unlock the catches.
