Description
0. POLAND.
MEASURE 0R RULE.
APPLICATION FILED $33126, 1908.
934,835, Patented Sept. 21, 1909.
CHRISTIAN POLAND, OF ERFURT, GERMANY.
MEASURE OR RULE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 21, 1909.
Application filed September 28, 1908. Serial No. 455,150.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN POLAND, factory manager, a subject of the King of Bavaria, residing at Erfurt, Kingdom of Prussia, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Measures or Rules, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a jointed measure or rule which can be used as a measuring tape, and the single members of which are made of band steel.
The novelty of this jointed rule consists in the single members being connected together by means of spring joints and provided with divisions, printed or applied in any desired manner. The spring parts are provided by the single members, made of band steel, engaging with each other, near their common joints, by means of stamped out slots and of stamped out and bent projections engaging with the same, so that they can be held fast both in the open and in the closed or superposed positions.
A construction of the new jointed rule is illustrated, by way of example, in the ac companying drawing in which Figure 1 is an elevation, Fig. 2 a vertical longitudinal section on the line A--B, and Fig. 3 a vertical cross-section on line (1-D of Fig. 1.
Each of the members 1 is provided, near the joint 2, with a slot 3, and a stamped out bent projection 4. When the members 1 are in the opened out position, the projections 4: engage in the slots 3 and thus hold the members firmly in the positions mentioned.
It will be seen from Fig. 3 that the proj ections 4 are laterally rounded off at their edges, in order to bring about, on the opening and closing of the jointed rule, a better disengagement and engagement of the projection at with the slots 3. The jointed rule thus constructed is provided with divisions or scales printed or applied in any desired manner. Owing to the members of the jointed rule being connected together by spring oints, it can be advantageously used as a measuring tape.
Instead of the upwardly bent stamped out projections, projections of any kind stamped out in the links 1 and engaging with the corresponding recesses of the adjoining link could be employed.
What I claim is:
A folding measure comprising a plurality of sections pivotally connected near their ends, the overlapping portions being provided near their terminals with tongues integral therewith, formed of partially stamped out portions bent substantially at right angles and oppositely directed with respect to each other, the bodies of the sections having eyes therein, said tongues engaging in said eyes to resiliently lock the sections when the measure is extended.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHRISTIAN POLAND.
Witnesses GUs'rAv LAAKE, J r., OSKAR HEIMANN.
