CHARLES T. RASCHICK, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR TO NATIONAL CHECKING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF MINNESOTA.
FOLDER FOR, COUPON-BOOKS.
Application filed February 17, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES T. RAsoHroK, of St. Paul, Ramsey county, Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folders for Coupon-Books, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to folders for coupon books and the object which I have in view is to provide a folder for dealing coupons from a folded strip. The strip used is provided with a series of coupons of similar denominations to be segregated by the purchaser and the segregated coupons to be dealt to the vender or vice versa. Said coupons of the strip may be provided with a double series of numbers forming an account statement for the convenience of the purchaser and the ven'der.
A further object is to provide a folder of such construction that it can be used a number of times after the original coupons have been removed.
My invention provides a simple and inexpensive device which is always ready for use and effective in operation.
My invention consists generally in providing a cover or folder in which a strip of conpons is held, said folder having a tearing edge over which said strip is adapted to be drawn as the coupons are used.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification Figure 1 is a front view of the folder in open position, part of the cover being broken away; Fig. 2 is a back view of the folder in closed position with the coupon strip therein; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section taken on the line IV- W of Fig. 2; Fig. 4: is a front view of an alternate construction; Fig. 5 is a back view of the folder illustrated in Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section taken on the line XX of Fig. 5; Fig. 7 is a cross section taken on the line YY of Fig. 4; Fig. 8 is a detail diagrammatic view on a larger scale than is illustrated in the other figures of the drawings showing the strip of coupons in the folder of alternate constructlon and Fig. 9 1s a plan view of a detail portlon of a strap of coupons used with my invention.
In the drawings A. represents the cover or folder which may be made of any suitable material, preferably, heavy paper, and having its ends folded to form a hinged back B and a front C. The front and back are pref- Specification of Letters Patent.

erably spaced apart by means of a connect ing web D where they are hinged together and a metal frame E near the extremities of the front and back. Said metal frame is in the form of a plate which is secured to the front of the cover by means of detents F and clips F and bent with a transverse offset or shoulder G which serves to assist in spacing the front and back of the cover apart when the cover is closed. The forward portion of the plate forms a tearing edge H for the strip of coupons I in the folder and the transverse offset G reinforces the strength of the back B of the cover. The
guide for the strip of coupons as it is drawn out of the folder. The rolled edge K produces an anti-friction surface so as to prevent tearing of the strip as it is drawn from the folder. The plate E with its rolled inner edge produces a combined retainer, guide, tearing edge and fastener for holding the strip of coupons in the folder. The coupon strip in folded position is loosely disposed between the front and back of the folder and its end L is looped around the guide over the rolled edge K and extended from the folder between the frame E and the front of the cover. The side edges of the front of the cover have flaps M which are turned inwardly between the front and back to assist in closing the folder and holding the coupon strip in place.
The front of the folder has an opening N for the purpose of exposing identification data on the back of the coupon strip such as the name of the owner, date of purchase of the strip, the amount paid, the number of the coupon strip and the signature of the vender, such data being preferably printed and written or otherwise inscribed upon the inner end of the strip as at O. The front also has its outer end notched at N so that the strip can be held below the thumb when marked in coupons with successive amounts along their margins, 011 one side with decreasing amounts I and on the other with increasing amounts Q, such amounts increasing and decreasing in direct proportion so that the purchaser and vender will know either from the coupon last torn off or from the next one remaining in the folder how much has been used of the strip and how many coupons remain in the book unused. The number of the coupon strip may be printed on each coupon as at R for the purpose of identification.
In use the coupon strip I is folded into the cover below the combined retainer and guide with its outer end extending from the cover as illustrated in the drawings and when a purchase is made the amount corresponding in coupons is segregated from the strip across the tearing edge.
It is obvious that such a device as described above is adapted for use in restau rants and for holding railway mileage strips or for other purposes where coupons are used commercially.
In the alternate construction illustrated in Figs. A to 8 inclusive the cover A has its ends folded to form a hinged front 2 and back 3. The front and back are spaced apart by means of a connecting web 4 where they are hinged together and a metal frame 5 at the extremities of the front and back. This metal frame as in the preferred construction is in the form of a plate which is secured to the front of the cover by means of detents 6 and bent with an offset 7 across the space between the front and back of the cover and extends the entire width of the cover. The front portion of the plate is inclined downwardly to meet the forward edge of the front to which it is secured by means of a clip 8. Immediately back of the inclined portion of the plate is a retainer 9' which holds the laps of the coupon strip in the holder. The forward edge 10 of the plate serves a tearing edge for thecoupon strip and the plate reinforces the strength of the front of the folder and has secured at its side edges a pair of spring fasteners 11 by soldering or other suitable means. The back of the folder is secured when closed between the spring fasteners. These spring fasteners hold the back against the frame 5 so that the strip is prevented from being drawn out except under tension. The metal frame 5 is provided with a guide S for the coupon strip B which is in the form of a wire frame 12 extending inwardly from the frame 5 between its ends. This wire frame has its ends secured to the plate by soldering or other suitable means and is bent with a transverse arm 14 midway between its ends upon which is a loose anti-friction roller 15. The coupon strip is held in folded position and loosely disposed between the front and back of the holder and its end 16 is looped around the anti-friction roller on the guide and extended from the folder between the frame 5 and the extremity of the back 3. The side edges of the front of the folder have flaps 17 and 18 which are turned inwardly between the front and back to assist in closing the folder and holding the coupon strip in place. The front of the folder has an opening 19 for the purpose of exposing identification data upon the back of the coupon strip as in the preferred construction.
In accordance with the patent statutes I have described the principles of operation of my invention together with apparatus which I now consider to represent the .best embodiment thereof, but I desire to have it understood that the apparatus shown is only illustrative and that the invention can be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set forth, within the scope of the following claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is 7 1. A folder for holding a folded coupon strip having a pair of hinged flaps and sides folded between said flaps, and a retainer secured to one of said flaps having an outer tearing edge, an inner guide over which the folded strip plays and means for holding the flaps closed with said folded strip between them, for the purposes specified.
2. A device for holding a folded coupon strip, comprising, a cover having a pair 01 hinged flaps and sides and a retainer secured to one of said flaps having a tearing edge on its outer end, a guide on its inner end, an offset between the ends of said retainer spacing said flaps apart and means for holding said flaps closed. I
3. A device for holding a folded coupon strip, comprising, a cover having a pair of hinged flaps, and a retainer between the free ends of said flaps comprising a plate having a tearing edge on its outer end, a guiding edge over which the strip is drawn from within said holder on its inner end and an offset between the ends of said retainer for spacing said flaps apart.
at. A device of the class set forth, comprising, a cover having a pair of hinged flaps adapted to hold a folded strip, a plate between said flaps having an outer tearing edge, an inner guiding edge for the folded strip and an offset between the ends of said plate serving to space said flaps apart and hold the folded strip between said flaps and means for holding said flaps closed.
5. A device of the class set forth, comprising, a cover having a pair of flaps one of which has an opening and a plate secured to one of said flaps having a tearing edge on its outer end, a combined retainer and anti-friction guide on its inner end and a pair of clips at the sides of said plate for holding the flaps closed for the purposes specified.
6; A device of the class set forth comprising a cover having a pair of hinged flaps or sides, the outer end of one of said flaps being notched and a plate secured to the other flap and reinforcing its strength having a tearing edge on its outer end, an antifriction guide on its inner end, an ofiset 10 between its ends spacing said flaps apart and means at the sides of said plate for holding said flaps closed.
