Be it known thatI, JOHN SAMUEL Dons- WORTH, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Leavenworth, in the county of Leavenworth and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receipt-I-Iolding Cases; and I do hereby declare the following to be a fnll, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

For `the payment of dues in fraternal societies a receipt is given, and for the purpose of its preservation and as a means ofthe personal identification of the bearer I have produced an official foldable receipt-holding case adapted for use by local societies, so that it may be shown in visiting local lodges or aeries, and for this purpose the case bears the symbol of the society-as, for instance,-

an eagle associated with the words HLarned Aerie, No. 1035, Fraternal Order of Eagles, and my improvement resides in the means of confining the receipt within the center of a foldable case beneath a flexible transparent panel-retainer, so that the opening of the case will expose the receiptand serve to identify the bearer as a member of the Eagles with the advantage of allowing the receipt to be examined on its under side without the necessity of removing it from beneath the retainer. In the claims appended hereto I will point out the precise novelty wherein myimprovement resides, in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows the closed receipt-containing case. Fig. 2 shows the foldable case opened to expose the receipt confined beneath the central transparent panel-retainer. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2 transversely of the case and lengthwise of the transparent panel receipt-retainer. Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2 longitudinally of the retaining-case, showing the receipt confined bythe central transparent retainer and the ends of the receiptfree to be folded upon the retainer. Fig. 5 shows the case opened to expose its center and side flaps each provided with a transparent retainer, whereby the receipt is confined in the middle of its length and at each end by a pransparent retainer and foldable with the ".lfhe receipt-holder is of suitable flexible material forming a case, preferably of leather, of three equal portions, the central portion l Specification of Letters Patent.

Y being flanked by flaps 2 and 3, adapted to be folded upon each other to form a cover for the central portion. The inner side of the central portion of the case is supplemented by a facing of transparent liexible material, a thin sheet of celluloid 4 being preferable. The sheet is fastened at each end, preferably by stitching 5', to the edge of the central portion, which forms the backing of the case, which may be finished in any suitable manner. The Celluloid sheet forms a panel for tached, and its longitudinal edges are along the folding-lines 6 of the side iiaps. The panel of the middle portion has its longitudinal edges 7 unattached, and the panel normally lies against the backing, so that the transparent panel and the backing can be separated between the stitched ends ofthe panel to allow the insertion of the receipt 8 rserted the panel resumes its normal flat position in a self-clamping function uponthe inserted receipt, retaining it under the flexible panel, so that it can be read through it when the flaps are opened, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4.

Gbviousl'y the case is complete with the central portion only provided with the celluloid panel; but each portion of the backing may be provided with such transparent panel-retainer 4 for each end of the receipt, in which case its ends and the youter edge are attached to the backing, the inner edge 7 being unattached to allow of the insertion of the receipt between the panel and the backing, as in Fig. 5. It is important to note that while the flexible function of the panels allows them to be opened or sprung away from the backing at the unattached edge, the elastic function of the retainer and the manner of fastening it to the backing will cau-Se it to automatically close upon the reagainst the backing.

Referring to Fig. 4, it will be seen that the' receipt S can be pulled partially out at either end of the retainer, so that it may be examined on its under side without pulling it entirely from beneath the transparent retainer or removing it from the case, and that the receipt is held in the middle of its length only, while in Fig. 5 the receipt is held in its middle and at each end and can be inserted and. removed by giving the backing a slight pressure to bend it in the middle of its length and the act of bending the backing will cause the at either edge of the panel, and when so inceipt and retain it by a clamping action that portion of the backing to which it is at- IOO celluloid strip or strips to spring out lengthwise to insert or examine the receipt, as seen by dotted lines in Fig. 3.

l/Vhile the device is designed for holding the receipts for payments to fraternal societies and for the identification of the owner, obviously it may be adapted for carrying other papers or notes, and it may be made of cloth or paper and the central portion may have a stifl'eninglining and the flaps may bear the name and address of the owner.

I claimp l. A receipt-holding case having central flexible portion ilanked by flexible flap-covering portions, the central portion having a panel of transparent flexible material stitched at each end to the edges of the center portion, the longitudinal edges of the transparent panel being parallel with the Joldingdines of the flaps' and unattached, whereby the receipt can be inserted beneath the panel at either unattached edge and held in place at the middle of its length to expose the receipt when the 'laps are opened.

As a new article of manufacture, a receipt-holding case comprising three equal ilegible portions, two of which form flanking i cover-liaps to the center portion, apanel of celluloid attached at each end to the edges at the inner side of the center portion the longitudinal edges of said panel being parallel with thefolding-lines of the flaps and unattached, whereby a receipt 1s held in the middle oi its length and retained for exhibition when the flanking flaps are opened.

As a new article of manufacture, a re` ceipt-holding case comprising three equal flexible portions two of which form ilanking cover-flaps to the center portion, the inner side of each portion being supplemented with a thin facing-panel of Celluloid each panel being separately attached at each end to the edge of the case, the center celluloid panel being unattached at its longitudinal edges and the celluloid panel of each iiap unattached at its inner longitudinal edge, the open edges of each supplemental panel being adjacent the unattached edges of the center panel and the receipt held mediately of its length and at both ends so that it can beremoved by-drawing 1t out from either side ot the center panel.
