Description

M. B. BRATTIN. COMBINED WASHTUB AND HEATER.
. APPLICATION FILED OCT. 29, 1908. 933,954.

MARY E. BRATTIN, 0F OAKLAND, CALIFORN IA.
COMBINED WASHTU'B AND HEATER.
, the tub "nay be quickly heated to boiling, and
in this manner accelerate the washing of clothes, when, as trequently 18 the case, hot
*ater is not; readily available.
Another object 0% the invention is to shnplii'y the construction and arrangement of the organization so that the same may be installed wi'h facility in any convenient place where there ready access to fuel.
To the accomplishment of the recited objects. and others coi'mliautie therewith, the
preferred einhodiment of my invention rcsides in that construction and arrangcnnmt of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and embraced within the scope of the appended claims.
In said drawings :--l igure l is a sectional elevation of the wash tub, the heater, and
line, and Fig. ll is longitudinal section oi the wash tub and heater removed.
llcitcrring more particularly to the drawings for a detail description of my inventioin the numeral 5 desi nates a stationing wash tub constructml ol' corrugated boileriron and equipped with a'pair of faucets (t3). lleatmay he applied to the tub in various ways, but in the present instance, .1 drum will he of suggestive scope sullicient to all'ord l'ull explication of the principle of my invention. 'lhishcating drum (7), as clearly exhibited in transverse section in Fig, l of the drawings is of trapczi't'orm and has a cover or lid (8) hinged at 9, the said drum and cover being lined throughout \vitlrsuit able heat resisting material (10), such for exam do as asbestos. l 'urtherxnoredhe heating drum is made large enough to inclose the wash tub, the sides of which converge i Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept}. illt, jgfig. Application filed October 29, 1908. Serial No. 460,112.
abruptly to form a space (11) to insure a thorough radiation of the heat. The rear side of the heating drum is supported in a recess (12) having the contour of a scalene triangle and being formed inthe Wall (13), which has a main flue (14) and a ramified flue (15) communicating with the interior of the heating drum.
Beneath the arrangement hereinbefore de- -rihed is located a heater'pipe (l6) carrying the burners (17) and interjacent valves (18) and connected with any suitable source of gas supply, the said burners extending through the open portion of the drum and occupying a position in proximity to the bottom of the tub.
in use, water is admitted to the wash tub l (:5), which, it will be assumed contains the oiled clothes. The lid (8) is then closed ,and the burners ('17) lighted, causing the heated air to circulate around the tub in space (11? and eventually making its exit through t 1e egress flue into the main line (let). ()wing to the relative disposition of the tub and the heating drum and the resultant area of the former that is subjected to the action of heat radiation, in a coinparatively short time the water will be in a state of ebullition. in operation the lid (8) serves in a dual capacity as a cover for both the wash tub and the heatin drum.
l claim new is:-
1. The combination with a wall having an int-lined recess and a flue therein, of a heating drum having a quadrilateral contour, the rear side of said heating drum adapted to lie contiguous said recess so as to support the drum at right angles to the wall a wash tuh incloscd by said drum, said tub converg ing downwardly to form a space to permit, radiation of the heat from the wal 5 surrounding it and allow circulation of the heated gas, and said wall having a communicating passage from the drum to-the .l line.
I 'lhe con'ibination with a wall having an nrlined recess and a fine therein, of a heati ing drum having a tpiadrilateral contour, the rear side of said heating drum adapted to l lie contiguous said recess so as to support Havin thus described my invention what the drum at right an les to the Wall, a wash tub, the bottom of said drum being open, and tub inclosed b said rum, said tub converg burners disposed through said openin '10 in downwar 1y to form a space to permit In testimony whereof I hereunto a ix my ra iation of the heat from the walls sursignatul e in presence of two Witnesses. rounding it and allow circulation of the MARY E. BRATTIN. heated gas, said Wall having a communicat- \Vifinessesr o ing passage from the drum to the-flue, a 'F. P. SoHROEDER,
