Description
 dilated tant aient camine...
Letters Potent N 93,387,Zated Aug/115153, 1869.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concernl Be it known that I, DAVID l). YOUNG, of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery, in the State of Ohio, have invented a new and improved Pessary; andv I do hereby declare that the following is afull and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature ofmy invention consists in the construction of a winged pessary, with an improved ad? justment; also, in attaching a spring used to extend it, which requires, lult little compression to make it occupy less space.
To enable others skilled in tlie art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The ligure represents the pessa-ry in perspective.
A A represent the two wings, which maybe constructed ofwood or other suitable substance, and are connected together by metallic hinges, c c, iu the manner shown.
Eaeh'of the wings has an orifice for the escape of cxcretions. The hinges are riveted to the wings, and the parts of the hinge are held by the threaded rod o, which is riveted atone end, and the other end terminates in a slotted head.
On this rod isv placed thc nut n, which nut occupies the rear space between the wings.
This space has an inclination inward from the bottorn toward the top, iu the position in which the pessary is shown. v
By applying. a screw-drivel'V to the rod, the nut is moved to any position desirable, and by this `mea-ns the relative position of the wings is determined.
On the backis attached' a sheet of rubber, m, indicated by dotted lines, which is attached to .the wings by two metallic plates, c @,-which are screwed firmly on to the rubber.
The ofice ofthisrubber is to extend thevngs.
A metallic spring, properly 'protected from oxidation, may bc substituted for the rubber,tl`1e position of which is indicated at d.
c A cord, B, is attached to the rear whichit may-be withdrawn.
To introduce the pessary into the vagina, the wings are brought together, and when released, the wings extend to the point of adjustment, which is varied as the conditions may require The hinged adjustment may be used wherever it is desirable to limit the movement of doors, shutters, &c.
What l claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
of the nut, by
1. The improved pessary, constructed substantially as described.
 2. lhe hinged adjustment, composed of the hinges c c,4 nut n., and rod o, constructed and arranged substantially as described, and for the purposes specified DAVID D. YOUNG. Witnesses DANL. YOUNG, l. PIOKERINGS
