Application 1ed Ju1y 9, 1908. SeriaLNo. 442,713. v
To all whom 'itmay concern;
Be it known that I, OSCAR C. ZIMMER- SGHIED, a citizen of the United States, residin at Topeka, in the county of Shawnee and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Binders for Floor- Coverings; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledfin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a seam binder for floor coverings such as linoleum, oil cloth, cork,'-or other material possessing a certain amount of stiffness, and has for its object to provide simple means of this kind whereby the edges of adjacent strips of-the covering may be securely clamped together without the use of tacks or other fastening devices.
A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby a binding maybe eected between the edges of adjacent strips ter-tight.
With these and other objects in view,
of the covering that will be absolutely wathe invention consists of certain novel features of construction,y combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out.in the ap ended claim.
n the accompanyin is `a plan view of the tion; Fig. 2 line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fi f. 3 is a similar view `taken on line 3?-3 of Fig. 1f; Fig. 4 is a dedrawings, Figure l inder, partly in sectail perspective view of a portion ofoneof the connecting strips; and Fig. '5 is a detail perspective view of one ofthe connecting pieces.y p
In the embodiment illustrated, the seam binder comprises a number of connecting strips l, each Vof which is constructed from a single piece of metal such as brass, zinc', or the like, bent to form a central flat top portion 2, thence inwardly at opposite side, vedges against the inner face of its top portion to a point centrally of the width thereof to rovide clamping portions 3, and then exten ed outwardly or in' an opposite direc-I Seamis a transverse View taken on 'tion to `provide approximately flat base portions 4, which rest uponthe floor which is to be covered, the outerside edges of the base portions preferably extending beyond the side edges of the top portion andgtheinner portions of the base portions spaced from the clamping portions to leave spaces 5, to receive the side edges of the adjacent strips of coveriiig,as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. When itis necessary to use three or four connecting strips along the length or -width ofthe floor to bind adjacent edges of the strips of the covering, these connecting' strips are connected by flat connecting pieces 6, which are inserted in opposite ends of adjacent connecting strips between the top and clamping portions thereof.l v
From the Jforegoing description taken in connection/with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readil understood without requiring a more exten ed explanation. l v Having thus described lmy invention, what I`claim as new is In a seam binder for connectingvthe meeting edges of flexible floor covering strips, connecting strips each made from a sin le piece of thin flat metal` bent to form a top portion, inwardly extending clamping portions and straight outwardly extending ase portions spaced below the clamping portions and extending outwardly beyond 'the side edges of the top portion, leaving vertical spaces between the'clamping portions and base portions to receive the meeting edges of the Hoor strips and flat metal pieces extending between the connecting sections with their` ends fitting between the top..
and clamping portions thereof, the connecting strips forming a protection or covering for the meeting edges of the floor covering strips.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set vmy hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
