C. L. lVIOLEARY.
GARPBT FASTBNBB.
No. 397,598. 1 Patented Feb. 12, 1889.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE,
fARSON L. MCCLEARY, OF JERUSALEM, OIIIO.
CARPET- FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 397,598, dated February 12, 1889.
Application filed October 3, 1888. Serial No. 287,101. (No model.)
To all whom. it may concern.-
Beit known that I, CARSON L. MCCLEARY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jerusalem, in the county of Honroe and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet Binders and Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, :reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. y
This invention relates to means for binding carpets and securing them to the floor.
The object of. the invention is to provide a simple means for binding the edges of a carpet, and which will at the same time furnish a ready means for securing the carpet to the iioor and a molding for the sub-base of the room.
The improvement consists in a strip or molding having one or more longitudinal grooves or channels in its side to receive the carpet, and having bearing-faces on each side of the said grooves or channels and corresponding` binding-strips, which are adapted to be inserted in the said grooves or channels to clamp the carpet and come iiush with the said grooved side of the strip, the carpet being held between the sides of the grooves and the sides ol' the binding-strip and between the il oor and the bearing-faces.
The improvement consists ol' the novel Features, which will be heieinafter more t'ull y described and claimed, and shown in the accompanyin g drawings, in which- Figure l is a section of one edge of a carpet, showing the application of my invention; Fig. 2, a modication, and Fig. 3 a still further modification. i
In Fig. l the strip or molding A has but one groove or channel, a, in its side, in which the carpet C is fitted and held by a single binding-strip, B, which is forced in the said groove or channel to clam-p the carpet between its sides and the walls of the groove or channel. The bearing-faces a. on each side of the groove or channel CL press upon and hold the carpet between them and the Iioor.
In Fig. 3 Jthe strip or molding D has two grooves or channels, d and d', and is provided with two binding-strips, E and E', which clamp j the carpet F between them and the walls of u the said grooves or channels. The bearing- 'faces are increased by this construction, there being three, e, e', and e?.
Fig. 2 shows a strip of metal, G, having its middle portion deflected between its edges to form the channel g, the carpet H being clamped between the walls of the said channel g-and the binding-strip I. The edges of the strip form bearing-faces 'i and i', which rest upon and hold the carpet in place. y
In binding the carpet with any oi the abovedescribed devices care should be taken to have them parallel with the woot or the weft threads of the carpet, because when the'carpet is stretched it will be subject to an even tension and the patterns will not be distorted. 'lhe carpet is fastened to the floor by nailing the binding-strips thereto, as will be readily understood.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Leiters Patent, 1s-
for carpets, composed ot' a strip having a groove or channel in .its Linder side and having bearing-faces on each side of the said groove or channel to rest upon and clamp the carpet between them and the Hoor, and a binding-strip adapted to be inserted in the said groove or channel and come tlnsh with the said bearingfaces and clamp the carpet between it and the walls of the said groove or channel, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my sign atnre in, presence ot' two witnesses.
TARSON Il. MCCIIEARY. XVitnesses:
W. Anl-loWELL, JAMEs TAGGART.
