SMOKE-STACK s-Asn non cnIr/rnnr-rors.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. *7, 1909.
Application filed January la, 1909. Serial No. 472,352.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. TINSTMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Butler, county of Dekalb, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoke- Stack Bases for Chimney-'lops, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to Smokestack bases for chimney tops.
A very common practice is the provision of a metal smoke stack attached to thetop of a chimney to afiord' a better draft and convey the sparks sufficiently high so that they will not fall on the roof, besides curing the defects in draft caused by air currents. These metal stacks rapidly corrode and burn out and usually have to be renewed periodically at considerable expense especially as the most expensive part of the stack is that which connects to the chimney, and once this part'is damaged, the entire stack is ren-, dered useless. a
My invention has for its objectthe provision of a molded cement top, internally reinforced and provided with a'metal shell,
all of novel construction which may beeasily molded and readily cemented to the top of any chimney, which will be provided with a novel metal attaching collar to which an inexp'ensivetubular smoke stack may be readily attached and hence when the smoke stack wears out, it can be readily renewed, at very small cost, by removing the old stack and substituting another therefor, the molded chimney top and novel metal lining and collar therefor remaining on the chimney.
A chimney top constructed in accordance, with my invention is durable, strong, requires no fastening devices of any kind, and may be inexpensively produced and sold, and it may be used by itself, without the addition to the stack or flue, although the best results, for purposes heretofore set forth, are obtained by attaching a tubular stack.
The invention is set forth fully hereinafter and the novel features thereof are recited in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a vertical section of the invention applied to a chimney; Fig. 2, a plan of the invention; and Fig. 3, a side view thereof.
The chimneytop 1, which is also the base for the stack, is molded from cement or other suitable plasticmaterial of the desired size and shape to fit the top of the chimney and when being molded it is formed about a. tubular metal lining or shell 2, having a flared bottom 3 merging into the bottom of the top 1, and at its upper end is provided an inclined flange d which slopes a substantial continuation of the sloping top 5 of the cement chimney top 1. Above the flange a the shell or lining is extended as a collar 6 which is provided with openings 7 The molded top with metal lining, as set forth, may be used without a stack, if desired, but an ordinary tubular smoke stack 8 is preferably fitted over the collar 6 and secured thereto by fastenings S) passing through the openings 7, the lower end of said stack or flue resting upon the flange at. The flange 4; serves the two-fold purpose of sustaining the stack and preventing it from sinking into the top 1, and of shedding water, by reason of its inclination.
In using the invention the top 1 is first molded with the metal lining, collar, flange, etc., and the complete article is then cemented to the top of the chimney and thereby becomes permanently attached thereto.
The device may be used, as described, or, a flue or stack may be connected thereto as previously set forth. No fastenings of any kind are required to secure the top to the chimney, 1101' need stay wires be used for the stack unless it is of considerable length. WVhen a stack becomes corroded or damaged, it can be readily disconnected from the collar 6 by removing the fastenings 9 and replaced at small cost as compared with replacing the old style complete stack having a lower part. The flared lower end 3 facilitates the passage of the products of combustion into the metal lining.
I find it advantageous to reinforce the top 1 by barb wire 10 and it is also advantageous to provide the lining 2 with lugs or projections 11 which will become embedded in the body 1 so that the lining is securely anchored.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an article of manufacture, a supplemental top for chimneys, comprising a base of cement or plastic material having an opening thereth-rough which is adapted to be set upon and cemented to the top of the chimney, and a metal shell embedded within the base and constituting'a lining for the 5 mental top for chimneys, comprising a base of cement or plastic material having an opening therethrough which is adapted to be set upon and cemented to the top of the chimney, and a metal shell embedded Within the base and constituting a lining for the opening thereof, the upper part of said shell extending beyond the base and serving as a flue section, and a laterally extending flange at the top of the said base and around the fine section aforesaid.
3. As an article of manufacture, a supplemental top for clnmneys, comprising a base of cement or plastic material having an opening therethrough, which is adapted to be set upon and cemented to the top of the chimney, and a metal shell embedded within the base and constituting a lining for the opening thereof, the upper part of said shell extending-beyond the base and serving as a flue section, and a smoke stack detachably connected to said flue section.
4:. As an article of manufacture, a supplemental top for chimneys, comprising a base of cement or plastic material having an opening therethrough which is adapted to be set upon and cemented to the top of the chimney, and a metal shell imbedded within the base and constituting a lining for the opening thereof, the upper part of said shell extending beyond the base and serving as a flue section, and a laterally extending flange at the top of the said base and around the flue section aforesaid, and a smoke stack detachably connected to said flue section and resting on said flange.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN \VM. TINSTMAN.
