JOSEPH A. RAMSEY, OF BEATRIGE, NEBRASKA.
EUSKER.
Application filed December 26, 1908.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom. it may concern:
lie it known tl at 1, Jose? citizen of the United State. ing at Ben; trice, in the county t Gage ano State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Husker, of which the following is a specifiration.
This invention relates to corn-huskers more particularly to that class of hn.
a n d ters Patent issued to me on the 1 t day of April 1908, under llo. 8841309.
The object of the invention is 'enerally to improve and simplify the construction of pr vide means for retaining the latter in position on the thumb during the husking operation, thereby to preventlacerating or otherwise injuring the thumb of the operator.
vFurther objects and advantages will appear in the following description, itbeing understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification :n igure 1 is a perspective view of a corn-husking device constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the same in position on the thumb. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the device de taehed.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
The improved husking implement forming the subject matter of the present invention comprises a pair of pivotally united sections and 6, preferably formed of metal and adapted to be worn on the thumb, as best shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The section (3 consists of a ring split longitudinally, as indicated at 7, so that the same may be adjusted to lit the thumb of the operator, said ring or section being provided with oppositely disposed laterally extending ears 8, which bear against the exterior walls of the section 5 and are pivotally combined therewith by pins or studs 9 so as to permit free movement oi? one section relatively to the other during the husking operation. The section 5 is curved to conform to the shape of the thumb and is cut away at 10 to accommodate the knuckle or joint of the thumb so as to permit pivotal movement of the sections without danger oi": pinching the flesh.
Extending aterally from the convex face of the section 5 are a plurality of shredding iingers or teeth 11, preferably formed by producing one or more slits or incisions in the metal and bending the metal between said incisions upwardly and outwardly, as shown.
The rear portion of the thumb stall or sec-- tion 5 is open and extending laterally from the opposite longitudinal edges of said section at the open side thereof are one or more laterally projecting arms 12 which serve to assist in retaining the section 5 in position on the thumb.
The section 6 is provided with an extension 18 the free end of which is reduced and pivotally connected at 1 1 with a thumb plate 15.
The thumb plate 15 is curved to conform to the shape of the hand and is provided with oppositely disposed wings 16, one of which bears against the back of the hand, while the other extends over the ball of the thumb, as best shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
Secured to one of the wings 16 is a strap 17 having a series of perforations formed therein for engagement with the tongue of a buckle 18, the latter being carried by a strap 19 secured in any suitable manner to the other wing of the thumb plate.
Attention is here called to the fact that the pivots 9 and 1e are arranged at substantially right angles to each other so as to form in effect a universal connection between the thumb stall and thumb-piece 15, thereby to permit freedom of movement of the thumb during the husking operation. It will also be noted that the shank or extension 13 is curved or bowed transversely to conform to the shape of the thumb, while the peripheral edge of the thumb plate 15 is curved or deflected laterally at 20 so as to prevent injury to the hand when placing the attachment upon or removing said attachment from the hand.
The device is principally designed for use in connection with a husking glove or mit, and when so used is placed in position on the thumb with the shredded teeth or fingers projecting laterally and arranged in the path of movement of an ear of corn as the latter is drawn across the palm of the hand.
By providing the thumb plate 15 and attaching straps 17 and 19, the sections 5 and 6 may perform their functions without danger of twisting or turning and without discomfort to the operator.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
1. A corn-husker comprising a thumb stall formed of pivotally united sections, one of which is provided with a plurality of laterally extending shredding fingers, a concavoconvex thumb plate pivotally connected with the other section and arranged to partially embrace the hand at the ball of the thumb, and an attaching means carried by said thumb plate.
2. A corn husker including pivotally united sections, one of which is provided with a plurality of laterally extending shredding fingers and the other with a longitudinal extension, a concavo-convex thumb plate pivotally connected with the extension and arranged to partially embrace the hand at the ball of the thumb, and an attaching strap carried by the thumb plate.
3. A corn husker including pivotally united sections, one of which is provided with laterally extended shredding fingers and the other with a longitudinal extension, a thumb plate pivotally connected with the adjacent end of the extension, and means secured to the thumb plate for retaining the husker in position on the hand of the operator, the pivots of said sections and thumb plate being disposed substantially at right angles to each other.
4-. A corn husker comprising pivotally connected sections, one of which constitutes a thumb stall and is provided with a plurality of tip-struck laterally extending shredding fingers, a transversely curved extension formed on the other section, a concavo-convex thumb plate pivotally connected With the extension and curved to conform to and adapted to partially embrace the hand at the ball of the thumb, arms extending inwardly from the thumb stall, and an attaching strap carried by the thumb plate for retaining the husker in position on thehand.
5. A corn husker including pivotally united sections, one of which is provided with a convex face and an open back, arms formed integral with the convex section and extending laterally across said section at the back thereof, shredding fingers projecting laterally from the convex face of said section, a longitudinally disposed transversely bowed extension formed on the other section, a thumb plate pivotallyconnected with the extension and having its peripheral edge deflected laterally to present a smooth bearing surface, said thumb plate being curved to conform to and adapted to partially embrace the hand at the ball of the thumb, and attaching strap carried by the thumb plate.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH A. RAMSEY.
