Description

E. HOCKENBARY.
CORN HUSKER. APPLIOATION FILED 0CT,23I, 1912.
Patented July 29, 1913.
` llorneys /NVENTOR WITNESSES To all 'whom #may concern: l
-Unirnn sfrafrns entranti onirica.
EARL HOCKENBARY, 0F HAMPTON, NEBRASKA;
` CORN-Huskies.
Bte it` known that I, EARL Houten-Bmg, ac1t1zenpof the UnitedStates, residing at Hampton, 1n the county of Hamiltonv and State 'of Nebraska, have invented certain -new and useful Improvements in Corn Huskers, of which' the-.follovving is a specilication. y v r- This invention relates to corn husking im: plements, Vand pertains especially to a hand palm devi-ee of the class of ytwin spur corn -huskers A The object of the invention is to provide in a corn husker such novel and peculiar construction and arrangement of parts as will conveniently and comfortably conform with number of operations' is required in a singlel husykingA ,operation than usual, and which the shape of the hand and permit Vsuccessive manipulations of the huskerin husking operations without producing the usual soreness in the hand, ,wrist a-nd arm.'
A further object of the invention to providefacorn husker-plate of such novelV and. .peculiar construction and arrangement offparts as will more perfectly conform with the hand-palm, andv will hookor grasp a greater amountof -husks so that a lless wiir permit a free and unrestricted vuse of the hand'during such operations.
' In. the; accompanying drawings forming .part of this application Figure lis a palijn view of a hand showing the applications of the. invention. Fig. Q- is a plan view of thel husker looking atthe inner: side thereof. Fig. 3- isan enlarged detail sectimi taken on the dotted li'e Fig. 1. Fig. 4.- is a similar view taken on the dotted lineal/y Fig. 1. Fig. .5 4 is a' plan view of the palm Plate, showing the lines for cuttingout the husking prongs dotted. Fig. G- is-a detail perspeo tive View of the palm-plate.
The same reference characters denote the same parts throughout the several views of the drawings. 4
The leather wrist band l, is provided with straps 2, and buckles 3, for attaching the band to the wrist, and a leather strip l is riveted to the cent-ral portion of the'band so as .to form a plurality lof rivet burs 5, for
roughened surface for the husk in a husking operation.
The essential feature of the inventionis the metal palm plate 6, Ahaving a concaved Specification of Letters Patent.
base 7 fitting theball ofthe hand-at the wrist, hand and thumb joints, and extending over such jointsto cover the same.' The husking prongs or hooks 8 are cut out of the plate oni-'the dotted lines a-.c, Fig. 5, so as 'to leaped; central stem 9 for connecting Patented July 29, i913. A Application med october as, 1912. semaine. 727,352.
the platehead 10 with the base 7, of the plate. The stem and the head constitute a Tshaped" plate portion vofthe palm plate and said stem tapers from the head .to the base of the palm plate. The stem 9 is concaved lengthwise to conform with the shape .of the palm of the' hand. One end of the' T-head is longer than the other,'and such longer end has a compound curve for the purpose of having thev inner edge of this end raised .outwardly from the handpalm and the outer edge of said end extends inwardly, so as to closely conform to and fit the joint between the thumb and the hand. The prongs 8 are bent backward and overhang the base portion of the plate ateach edge of the T-stem so as to leave a spaceibetween the prongs of greater Width than the width of the rongs or the width of the stem '9 at the Ibase 7 for the `purpose and advantage of having the Vprongs lhook a portion. of the. corn to occupy the space between the prongs. The prongs 8 have curved or conveXed edges tapering into a rounded point so that vthere are no sharp edges or points to injure or mutilate the corn during a husking operation.
A hand strap 11 is attached to the inner side of the T-head by rivets forming a pair of burs 12 on each end of said head, andV said burs assist in holding and preventing the husk from slipping and lin grasping it with the lingers in a husking operation.
-leather palm pad 13, is attached to the wrist band by means 0f the rivets 5, and extends under the palm plate, and is connected with the T-head by the strap 11 eX- tending through slotsl: in the corners of the pad 13, so that the pad may adjust itself to the palm of the hand and tothe shape of the palm plate. The T-head is inclined at an angleto the stem 9 and to the prongs 8 so as to follow the knuckle-joint .line in V the palm of the hand, and thereby permit free and unrestricted movement of suoli joints. l
It will be observed that owing rto the peculiar shape of the palm plate, the husk is more readily gras ed b the on s; that the fingers of the hand,- geing lseljilaraed only by the T stem, have greater grasping space than usual; that, by reason of the long twisted or curved shape of one end of the T-liead such end fits under the joint between the hand and the thumb so as not to interfere with the action of such joint, and that the other a short end of the T-head may be located on the ball of the palm and back of the said joint line.
.I do'not wish to confine or restrict myself to any particulai` size or material, in the manufacture of the invention, but reserve the right to make such changesl therein as may come within the scope of the appended claims.
e Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a corn husker, the combination with a Wrist band, a'palm strap, and a palm pad, of a husking plate having a T-shaped portion formed therein, a husking prong struck from the plate lon each sideedge of, the stem of the head and overhanging the base of the plate at the intersection of the stem and the base, and means for securing the plate to the wrist band.
2. In a corn husker, the combination with a wrist band, a palm stra-p, and a palm pad, of a husking plate having a T-shaped portion formed therein, a huskin prong struck from theplate on each side e ge of the stem of the head and overhanging the base of the plate at the intersection of the stem and the base, a palm strap attached to the T- head and extending through the palm pad,
' and means for securing the ad and the wrist band to the base of the p ate.
3. A corn husking plate comprising a'T- shaped portion having a tapered stem and a head inclined at an angle to the stem, a pair of husking pron struck up from the plate and separate by the stem at the intersection of the stem and the base of the plate and overhanging said base.
- 4. A one piece corn husking plate com# prising a base portion, a T-shaped portion projected from the base and having an inclined twisted head one end of which is longer than the other, and a pair of husking prongs struck out of the plate between the head and the base and overhanging said base portion. 'Y l 5. In a husking device, a wrist band fhav` ing attaching means and a husking element connected with the wrist band adjacent to the upper edge thereof, said husking element comprising a base plate having an upwardly extending shank rovided with an obliquely dis osed crossar, one 'arm of which, exten ing inthe direction of the thumb of the operator, projects materially beyond the corresponding side edge of the base plate, and the lower edges of the arms of the cross-bar being curved to merge with the side edges of the shank, thereby presenting arcuate recesses, said base plate being provided with downturned s harp pointed prongs formed of the material originally lying adjacent to the side edges ofthe shank and spaced apart thereby; andan attaching strap secured upon the underside of the cross-bar.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses'.
. SAM SANDERS,
J. B. CUNNINGHAM.
