ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE H. H.
PERKINS MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
CORN-HUSKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,722, dated January 30,1894.
Application filed January 6, 1393.
To @ZZ whom t may concern.-
Beit known that I, I-IAznN H. PERKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ke- Wanee, in the county of Henry and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn-Huskers,of which the following is a specification.
The corn husker to which the invention class in which a husking pin is provided with a loop strap which is also a guard strap for the forefinger, adjustable loop straps for the other fingers, and guard strap. between the husking pin and part of the fingers and hand.
The object of this invention is to produce a corn husker of the class referred to which will be economic of manufacture, durable, strong, easily and positively adjustable, with an adjustable forenger loop and guard, efficient in operation, and in which the parts are substitutive, and the parts most subject to Wear are separate and separable from the otherparts, and easily removable when they become worn, for substitution of duplicates vention consists in novel structural features, and novel organization of parts producing the composite structure, my improved corn husker, hereinafter described, and particularly specified in the claims forming part of this specification.
A husker embodying the preferred constructive forms of and showing the organization of the parts` forming the subject matter of my improvement, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which-` Figure 1 is a plan of my improved husker, seen from the strap side; Fig. 2, a side elevation of parts, and sectional elevation of other p'arts; Fig. 3, a modification, a side elevation of parts, and sectional elevation of other parts; Fig. 4,a modification hereinafter described; Fig. 5, a sectional plan in the line 5, 5, in Fig. 2. I
The husking pin Ais of ordinary construcpret'erably curved lengthwiseY of itself, and semi-circular in its cross section, so as to have a fiat side a', substantially as shown, and has, as shown at Figs. 2 and 4, a sleeve serai No. 457,489. (No man.)
a2 screw threaded on to its back end part, Which sleeve has fixed thereto an eye a3 that is elongated transversely of the husking pin A. VA sleeve a4 is also seated so that it may be slid or revolved on the pin A, and is also provided with an eye a5 that is elongated transversely of the husking pin A. The pin A has also an eye a6, which is elongated transversely thereof. I
The husking pin A as described and with the sleeve a2, adjustable as described, toward and from the eye a6, for the purpose of adjusting the loop straps which they carry to fit hands of different sizes, is shown in Letters Patent No. 429,475, issued to me J une 3, 1890. As shown herewith, however, the eye 0,6 the'longer way of itself is preferably'oblique to the plane of the flat side a of the pin A, and the sleeves a2, a4, are adjusted to retain the eyes which they respectively carry in line with the eye a6, so as to carry the finger loops hereinafter described projecting radially from the pin A obliquely to the fiat side a of said pin, for a novel purpose hereinafter described. Apart of the strapB is folded transversely of itself upon the part of the pinA which rests upon the second, third and fourth ngers andpart of the hand to form a guard between said pin and said fingers and hand, and has apertures b which receive the shanks of the eyesas, a5, to hold the strapin place on the pin, and at its front end h is turned or curved outwardly from the pin A, asA shown. The central part of the finger loop strap C passes through the eyes as, a5, and through the slot cl2 in the. forward end h of the guard strap B, and thence through the eye 0.6 to form a loop or receptacle c' for the little finger and aloop or receptaclec2 for the second and third fingers, and its ends c3, c4, are turned `backwardly from the eyes a3, ft2-respectively, over the loops c and c2, to where they are united bya buckle c5. By adjusting the sleeves a2 and a4 on thepin A, the loops c', c2, can be adjusted to hands of different widths and sizes, and
the strap C can be adj usted in an evident manner in the eyes a3, a5 and a6 and by means of the buckle c5, to adjust the size of the loops c', c2 to fingers of different sizes. The outwardly turned end b of the guard strap B,
IOO
and the forward side or part of the loop c2 together form a smooth surface which rests against the adjacent side of the finger and prevents it being injured by the force with which it is thrust against said finger so often in use, especially in forcing the point of the pin A into the husks, and in pulling on the husks with the point end of the pin to strip them from the ear of corn. The loops or linger receptacles c', c2, held as they are by the eyes d3, a5 and a in a radial plane'from the pin A, oblique to the fiat side a of the pin A, as shown best at Fig. 5, will cause the thumb when the husker is in place on the hand, to come squarely down upon the fiat side part a of the pin when the fingers and thumb are closed upon the husk and pin as in the operation of huskiug.
The loop strap D, as shown at Fig. 2, has a transverse slot din one of its ends, which is seated over the eye o.6 and on the shank thereof to secure it thereto, and is cut and riveted at its midlength part, as shown, to better flt the knuckle of the foreinger. The end d of the loop strap D has a series of transverse slots d2 therein, through either of which the return end c4 of the loop strap C may pass, to form a larger or smaller loop cl3 for the forefinger, as may be required by dif ferent persons.
Within the loop cl3 and resting against the return end c4 of the loop strap and one end of the adjustable loop strap D, is a forenger guard piece d4, through the edges of which and exterior to the loop strap D, rivets d5 pass to secure the guard piece d4 and end b of the guard strap B in place and to each other, as shown best at Fig. 5.
When the adjustable loop guard strap D is used, its breadth and smooth surface will prevent injury to the foreiinger by the backward thrust of the pin in use hereinafter described, and the strap D not being connected with or forming part of any of the other straps, and being the part most subject to Wear, can when worn out be readily and easily removed and a new adjustable loop strap D be substituted therefor.
If preferred, the adjustable loop strap D can be omitted or left off entirely, as shown at Fig. 4, and in that case the backward thrust of the pin in use will be prevented from injuring the finger as hereinbefore described.
The adjustable loop strap D may, if preferred, be formed and fixed in place as shown by the modification at Fig. 3, in which ease the guard piece d4is dispensed with, and the inner-end of the loop strap D curved as shown at said figure, until it occupies the place occupied by the guard piece d4, where it is secured to the end b of the guard strap B in same manner as the guard strap d4, and where it answers the same purpose as the guard d". In either way shown of fixing the adjustable loop strap D in place, it will have the necessary fiexibility, independently of the pin and of the loops c', c2.
It' preferred, the part of the strap C adjacent to the eye a3 may be secured to the pin A, as shown at Fig. 3, and as shown at Fig. 7 of the drawings of my patent hereinbefore referred to, as the particular way in which.
that part of the strap C is secured to that en 0f the pin A does not enter into the essential part of my invention, so long as the manner 0f securing that part of the strap C to the pin A does not interfere with my construction of the adjustable loop strap 1) and manner of connecting it with the pin A and strap C, which constitute features of my invention.
What I herein claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A corn husker, comprising, substantially as hereinbefore described, a pin A, a loop strap, as C, for part of the fingers, an adjustable forefinger guard and loop strap, as D, and a guard piece d4 within the loop strap D, and held in place by riveting to the part b of the guard strap B. v
2. Acorn husker comprising, substantially as hereinbefore described, a pin A, a loop strap, as C, for part of the fingers, a guard strap, as B, having an upturned end b and a forelinger guard and loop strap, as D, xed at one end to the end b of the strap C, and adj ustably fixed at its other end to the same strap C.
3. A corn husker comprising, substantially as hereinbefore described, a pin A, a loop strap, as C, for part of the fingers, a guard strap as B, with an outwardly turned end b', and a guard piece, as d4 fixed to the end b of the strap B, in front of the strap C, as a guard for the forefinger.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
