POLE-SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 31, 1909.
Application filed January 7, 1907, Serial No. 351,246. Renewed January 29, 1909. Serial No. 475,083.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN NEFF, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Falun, in the county of Saline and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pole-Support, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pole supports and more particularly to pole supports for harvesting and mowing machines, the object being to provide a pole support which is very simple and cheap in construction and one which is very effective in use.
Another object of my invention is to provide a pole support which will prevent side draft and remove the neck weight off the horse.
Vith these objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification: Figure 1 is a side elevational view of my improved pole support attached to the pole. Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the coupling member partly broken away. Fig. 4 is a section taken on line M of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is an end view of the wheel.
Referring to the drawing A indicates a stud tongue which is connected to the machine, harvester or mowing, as the case may be, by braces A, in the ordinary manner. A vertical bore A is formed in the end of the tongue in which is arranged a shaft B having an angled lower portion B provided with a collar B forming an axle on which is mounted a wheel C having a beveled rim 0 to correspond with the axle, so that the rim of the wheel will rest evenly on the ground. The wheel is secured on the axle by a washer D and a cotter-pin D in the ordinary manner.
A collar E is secured by a pin on the upper end of the shaft fitting in a recess formed in the upper side of the tongue around the bore A so as to prevent the tongue from being pulled up off the shaft. Mounted on the shaft under the tongue A is a collar F provided with a beveled hearing surface on which the tongue is adapted to rest and be supported. The collar is securely fastened on the shaft by a set screw F and is provided with spaced apertured ears F in which is secured a bolt G on which is mounted the eye H of a metal strip H which is secured to the under side of a pole I by bolts J.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination with a stud tongue having a vertical bore adjacent its free end surrounded by an annular recess on its upper side, of a shaft mounted in said bore having an angled lower portion, a collar secured on the upper end of said shaft by a pin fitting in the annular recess of the stud tongue, a collar secured on the angled portion of the shaft, a wheel mounted on said portion having a beveled rim, a cotter pin for securing said wheel thereon, a collar mounted on the shaft under the tongue and held in its adjusted position by a set screw, said collar being provided with a beveled portion upon which the stud tongue rests, spaced ears extending outwardly from said collar, and a tongue carrying a plate provided with an eye mounted on a bolt secured between said
