In Order that those skilled in the art may be enabled to make my invention, I subjoin'the following explanation of the diiierent'parts, and manner of their construction.
The sides A A are each composed of two pieces of suitable metal, a b and d j', of any desired length or width, each piece having one end turned down, forming an ear, G, and each having a narrow slot, c, running lengthwise to dear the ends.
' These two pieces are connected permanently by the iivets D D passing through the slots c c, holding them together, but not so closely as to prevent the two pieces working or sliding iongitudinally to the extent of the length of the slots in 'each combined.
'lhese two side-pieces AA are connected with each other' by the leather straps B B, fastened to the ears G G by means ofthe rivets E E.
Each strap is 'provided with a buckle, F, by means of which the width of the clasp may be increased Or diminished, at pleasure` The straps also provide suitable loops for carrying the clasp.
The sides A A are provided with adjustable clampscrews O C, having a head upon the inner surface of the clasp, and upon the outer thumb-nuts H H, which serve to hold the movable parts of the sides in position, when extended or drawn up, by being tightened icessity of adjusting the length when it is not requisite,
and allows the straps to be used as handles, as described. f
I claim as new, and desire to secure by -Letters Patent- As a new article Oi' manufacture, the extensible clasp for school-books, herein described, consisting Of the divided sides A A, constructed with ears G and longitudinal slots c, the rivets I) D, clamping-screws O H C H, straps B B, and buckles F F li", combined and arranged to operate substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth. l l THOMAS H.
