To all whom it may concern.' i

Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. CoMs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canon City,'i`n the county of Fremont-and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washingli/Iachines; and I do hereby declare the folwashing fluid in such a manner as to permit a thorough percolation or penetration of the washing fluid and air through the articles to be cleansed to assure the removal of all foreign substances from thearticles.

The invention also has for an object to provide a novel device of this character wherein is employed a. reciprocatoryholding member, said member being operated by mechanism exterior of the washing fluid container.

It is also an object of thev invention to provide a novel device of this character which will be simple in construction, efcient and advantageous in practice and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.

With the above and other objects inv view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the `novel arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more particularly referred to.

tainer or tub of any ordinary or preferred construction, having the closure 2 for the top or open end thereof. This closure may be as desired, but it is preferred that it be formed in two sections, the opposed edges of the sections approximately centrally thereof being provided with elongated recesses 3 which, when the sections ofthe `closure are assembled form an elongated opening for the passage of the rod 4. This rod 4at its upper end is pivotally secured to a depending ear 5 formed with an end portion of a lever 6.V This lever (S is pivotally secured intermediate its length by the pin 7 to the upstanding brackets 8 positioned adjacent one end of the tub 1. The end of the lever G opposed to that having the ear 5 is formed into a socket 9 for the reception of an operating handle 10.

It is `thoughtto be apparent that it is the vobject of the invention to oscillate the lever 46 so that the rod 4 may be reciprocated, the `elongated opening formed by the recesses 3 permitting suliicient lateral play of the rod 4 to assure its movement. F or convenience in operation the lever 6 has positioned adjacent its pivotal connection with the brackets S and extending at right angles to the lever a second socket 11, as is believed to be apparent.

. The lower end portion of the rod 4 has affixed thereto a spider 12, and approximately 'centrally thereof the rod has secured thereto Va second spider 13 and itis between the spiders 12 and 13 that the articles to be cleansed are inserted.

In the operation of the device the tub 1 is `filled with sufficient washing fluid as to extend above the upper spider 13 when the rod 4 is in approximately its lowermost position. Through the medium ofthe handle 10 and the lever 6 the rod 4 is caused to reciprocate, said reciprocation withdrawing the articles between the spiders 12 and 13 partially without the fluid, thereby permitting not only a percolation or penetration of the washing fluid but of air which together with the action of the fluid assures the removal of all foreign substances from the articles, in other words "it is to be stated that the present invention performs its function by an agitation of the articles to be cleansed within both a washing fluid and the atmosphere.

lVhen the form of invention disclosed in Fig. 2 is employed it is necessary that the closure 16 be assured against displacement. This may be done in any manner, but as Villustrat'ed in the drawings a sullicient'number of cross-bars 19 are employed, said cross-bars 19 projecting beyond either side of vthe tub 17, said projected portions being provided with depending eyes 20 engaged by hooks 21 pivotally secured to the sides of the tub.

Iv claim: Y vAdevice of the character described, comprising a receptacle having a'closure, a number of helical springs suspended from the under side of said closure and depending within said receptacle, with their lower ends arrangedf'a short distance from said closure,

a vertically reciprocable rod within said receptacle carrying a spider at its lower end,

` with, and be compressed by the action of the contents of said receptacle, as said contents are lifted by said spider at the upward movement of said rod having the effect to expedite` and render automatic the downward movement or stroke of said rod with its spider-member.
