To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. HAWK, residing at Bluff City, in the county of Sullivan and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and Improved Churn, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of churns having a removable vertically-reciprocating dasher; and it has for its object to -provide a churn of this character of a very simple and inexpensive construction, in which the several parts are arranged for easy manipulation and-which will effectivelyserve for their intended purposes. o v
This invention also has for its purpose to provide a churn having a convenient arrangement of dasher-operating means and a dasher detachably connected therewith.
The invention consists in the peculiar combination and novel arrangement of parts,such as will be rst described in detail, and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference' being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved churn. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same.- Fig. 3 is a detail view of the butter-lifting device hereinafter referred to. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3 3 ofFig. 2'. Y
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals indicate like parts in all the figures, 1 indicates the churn-body, which is preferably of a square or rectangular shape, having suitable supporting -legs 1L and a hinge-'cover or top 2, which has side portions 2, having bearings 3a for a crank-shaft 3, and brackets 4, having bearings for the operatingshaft 5, which shaft has a crank-handle 52M and a drive-gear 5b, which is held to mesh with a drive-pinion 3b on the crank-shaft 3, as clearly shown.
The hinge-cover 2 has a slot 2b for the pasl sage of the pitman-rod 7, secured to the crankshaft and having at the lower end a pair of arrow-headspring-tongues 8,which are adapted to be moved into a locked engagement with the rocker-bar 9 of the vertically-reciprocating dasher-frame 10. The frame 10 has side members 10a, held to slide between the guides 11, secured to the opposite sides of the churnbody, and acentral rigid member 10b, which carries at the lower end a dasher having fixed arms 12, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
So far as described it will be readily observed that by turning the crank-handle 5f the dasher-frame will be reciprocated vertically within the churn-body. It will also be observed that by connecting the pitman to the dasher in the manner shown and providing such frame with rocker member 9 when it is desired to remove the dasher it is only necessary to throw back the hinge cover, which causes the pitman to lift the dasherframe to a point above the top of the body, such operation being made possible by the rocker movement of the bar 9, which follows the angle of the pitman, it being manifest that when the cover has been raised and the upper end of the dasher-frame moved above the top of the body the dasher can be readily disconnected from the pitman by compressing the lock members 8,after which the dasherframe and dasher can be readily lifted out of the churn-body.
To provide a convenient means for lifting the butter out of the body in bulk, a removable holder 13, formed, preferably, of sheet metal and having a foraminated ybottom 13a, a pair of grooves 13b Von opposite sides, are iitted over the vertical guides 11, as clearly shown in Fig. 4, by reference to which it will be observed that the holder 13 is of a size to snugly iit the internal area-of the holder. The sides of the holder have theirupper ends drawn into loops to receive the bail portions 15 of lift-rods 15a, one of which in practice lies closely against the front and rear sides of the churn-body, and have their upper ends terminating in handle portions 15C.

By providing a lift member, as described, it is obvious that after the cover vhas been thrown back and the dasher removed the butter can be removed in bulk by lifting out the holder from the churn-body, it being manifest that the buttermilk will draw through the bottom thereof and pass through the discharge-nozzle.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,
it is thought the advantages of my improvement will readily appear. It willbe observed that the dasher and the butter-holder are so connected that they can readily be removed from the churn-body and the dasher-frame so constructed that it can be quicklyattached to or detached from the operating-pitman.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a churn, the combination with the churn-body, the hinge-top, the pitman, the operating mechanism thereof supported on the said hinge-top, of the vertically-reciprocating dasher, having a slotted rocker-bar 9, and the spring-clamps secured to the pitman adapted to pass through such slotted bar and be held in locked engagement therewith, substantially as shown and for the purposes described.
2. The combination with thc churn-body, having vertical guides and a vertically-reciprocating dasher and frame, said frame having a slotted rocker niemberin the upper end, the hinge-cover, the crank-shaft and operating means therefor supported on such cover, and the pitman-rod, said rod having arrowclamp members at opposite sides adapted to pass through a slot in the rocker-bar into a locked engagement therewith, all being arranged substantially as shown, whereby the said pitman will serve to pull the dasherframe in a vertical line above the top of the churn-body, substantially as shown and for the purposes described.
