Q32 7 5Q Qugufii 5i, Flt 6156A 932,736. DEVICE FOR- STROPPING q llE'BLADES OF SAFETY-RAZORS. FRANK M. \V LLL-uis, Potsdam, N. Y.
Filed June 29, 1908. Serial No. 4-LO,988. T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK M. VILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Potsdam, county of St. Lawrence, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Stropping the Blades of Safety-Razors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for stropping the blades of safety razors, and its object is to provide a simple and cheap device, conveniently adapted for the quick insertion and removal of the blade, which presents the blade to the strop at the proper angle, and which permits stroppingthe blade on both sides without removing it from the holder.
My invention will best be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which 7 Figure 1 shows a side elevation of the l stropping device arranged in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 shows a plan view of the same; and -lig. 3 shows an enlarged cross-sectional view with the parts in position for inserting or removing a blade.
In the drawings, A represents a. member which is split longitudinally so as to form two strips joined at one end, between which strips the blade B may be firmly clamped along its central axis.
U is a second member which is provided at one end with a hole through which a screw-threaded extension of member A extends, the hole being enlarged on one side I to form a socket 0 adapted to receive the shoulders a, a, on both strips of member A.
D is a knurled nut on the screw-threaded extension of member A, which extension may be flattened at the end, as shown in Fig. 3, to prevent the nut D from coming off. hen nut D is screwed up tight, as in Fig. 1, the shoulders a, a, are drawn tightly into socket 0, so that the blade B is clamped firmly between the strips of member A, and the two members A and C form the legs of a rigid L-shaped member. The end of leg C is provided with a pivot e, on which is pivoted a handle E with its axis approximately parallel to the axis of member A.
To strop the blade, the member A is placed on the upper side of the strop in the qsape e SPECIFICATIONS OF PATENTSA GUST 31, 1909;
Pages? position shown in Fig. 1, it being understood that the plane of the strop is vertical to the paper, and the handle'is' moved back and forth in a plane parallel to the plane of the strop. The friction of member A on the strop causes the L-shaped member, formed by A and C, to rock slightly on pivot 6, so as to lift the front edge of the blade away from the strop and to bring the trailing edge of the blade against the strop and drag it along its surface. The angle at which the blade is pressed on the strop is determined by the thickness of member A in a directionperpendicular to the plane of the blade, and the amount of pressure is determined by the length of member C, which determines the leverage of the handle on the blade. Consequently both angle and pressure are properly determined by properly proportioning A and C. To strop the other side of the blade, nut D is slightly loosened, so as to free shoulders a, a, from socket 0, member A is turned about its own axis 180, and nut D is again tightened. To remove the blade, nut l) is moved back to its extreme position shown in Fig. 3, so as to permit the shorter strip of member A to spring out from the hole in member C.
I do not desire to limit myself to the particular construction and arrangement of parts here shown, but aim in the appended claims to cover all modifications which are within the scope of my invention.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is,
1. A device for stropping the blades of safety razors, comprising a substantially L-shaped member having one of its legs adapted to engage the blade along its cen tral axis and to hold it firmly, and a handle pivoted to the other leg near its end with its axis substantially parallel to the first leg of said member, whereby the blade and its holding member may swing freely about the axis of the handle.
2. A device for stropping the blades of safety razors, comprising a substantially L-shaped member having one of its legs longitudinally split so as to receive and firmly clamp the blade, and a handle pivoted to the other leg near its end with its axis substantially parallel to the first leg of said member, whereby the blade and its holding member may swing freely about the axis of the handle.
3. A device for stropping the blades of safety razors, comprising a substantially L-shaped jointed member, one of its legs being movable on its axis and provided with means for clamping it rigidly to the other in either of two positions, said movable leg being adapted to receive the blade and engage it firmly along the central axis of the blade, and a handle pivoted to the other leg with its axis substantially parallel to the first leg of said member, whereby the blade and its holding member may swing freely about the axis of the handle.
4. A device for stropping the blades of safety razors, comprising a substantially L-shaped jointed member, one of its legs being movable on its axis and provided with means for clamping it rigidly to the other in either of two positions, said movable leg being split so as to receive and firmly clamp the blade, and a handle pivoted to the other leg with its axis substantially parallel, to the first leg of said member, whereby the blade and its holding member may swing freely about the axis of the handle.
A device for stropping the blades of safety razors, comprising a substantially L-shaped member having one of its legs adapted to engage the blade along its central axis and to hold it firmly, a handle pivoted to the other leg near its end with its axis substantially parallel to the first leg of said member, whereby the blade and its holding member may swing freely about the axis of the handle and means for permitting the movement of one leg on the other to reverse the blade and for clamping said leg to the other firmly in either position.
6. In a device for stropping the blades of safety razors, a member adapted to engage the blade along its central axis and to hold it firmly, a. second member at an angle to the first having a socket adapted to be entered by the first member, means for drawing said member into said socket and clamping it firmly therein, and a handle pivoted to the second member with its axis substantially parallel to the first member, whereby the blade and its holding member may swing freely about the axis of the handle.
7. In a device for stropping the blades of safety razors, a member composed of two narrow strips joined at one end and adapted to receive the blade between them, a second member at an angle to the first having a socket adapted to receive the other ends of said strips, means for drawing the first member into said socket whereby said strips are clamped together at said other ends, and a handle pivoted to said second member, with its axis substantially parallel to the first member.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 13th day of June, 1908.
