Description

L. N. STEWART.
RULE HOLDER.
APPLIUATION FILED JUNE 12,
Patented Aug. 24, 1909'.
finvirnn -sfrarns Parana? version LEMUELVHN. STEWART, 0F AGENCY, TMISSOURI.
RULE-HOLDER.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it 1nnovvn that I, LEMUEL N. STEWART, citizen oi' the United States, residing at Agency, in the county' oi' Buchanan and State o'l' Missouri, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Rule-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has l'or its object to devise a clanip for holding and retaining objects oi" elongated rectangular' conteur, the special application oi' the device being the retention ol' a `folded tivo-foot, or other length, measuring-rule in such a manner that a carpenter or other artisan niay con stantly have it in handy position ready for use.
A still i'urther object is to provide an attachment oi' this character which practically iills the inouth of the pocket, so that rule, or other tool, can be very readily placed therein.
rlhe invention 'further consists oi the novel features and details of construction 'which hereinafter will be set forth, illustrated, and clainied.
Referring to the drawings Vl'erining a part olI the specification: Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the practical application olI iny invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view or the holder complete and ready for introduction into the pocket, having the iront sprung outward slightly at its Afree end. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section, showing the device as applied the dotted lines indicating the position ell a ruler held in place therein. llig. et is a diagrannnatic vienv ol` the biank lroni which the holder is niade alter the saine has been stainped ont. 5ig. 5 is a top plan vien'.
Corresponding and like parts are vrei'erred to in the 'l'olloning descriptionand indicated in all the viens oi' the drawings by the saine relerence characters,
In constructing a holder in accordance with iny invention l employ a plate, of spring sheet metal, and 'l'orin a rectangular box, or loop, thereof, by the parts 1, 2, 3, et and rThe part 2 constitutes the back, i the iront, and 1 and 3 the ends of the holder, the part 5 being a stop adapted to liinit the closing of the i'ree ends ol the front and rear walls ol' the holder. il`he stop 5 keeps the Yfront and hack oli' the holder separated suiii- Specircation of `Letters Patent.
Application filed June 12, 1908.

ciently to readily admit oi the ruler passing o between thern when placed in position. EX- tended upwardly from the front and rear Walls, 4 and 2 respectively, is an outwardlylared seinicircular portion 6, which portions forni a lnouth or guideway to facilitate introduction of an object into the device from the top, and extended upwardly and then downwardly frein the end portions 1 and 3 are clip portions 7, Which terminate in inwardly eXtending teeth or serrations 8.
ln the operation and use of the invention the device is placed Within the pocket which artisans generally have in the clothing for carrying a rule, the clip portions 7 en the outside, so that the rule-holder may be retained Within the pocket to prevent the holder from falling out when the artisan stoops over, the teeth or serrations S being pressed into the fabric. Having-placed the device in suitable position, the rule or other' object can be readily inserted, the guides directing the sanie in position and the holder contracting to prevent the displacement of the rule when the person stoops.
Frein the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that l have provided a rule-holder which While sirnple in construction, inay be cheaply manufactured and which Will insure the ruler being easily and quickly placed in the pocket and prevent its loss by being jarred or dropped from the pocket.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A holder of the character described, comprising a loep of elongated toi-in and coniprising a front, b ack, and ends, said front and back being rigidly connected y one of the ends and free to inove at the opposite ends to adinit of the loop contracting and. expanding.
2. A holder of loop form comprising a front, a back, and ends, the front and back` being connected by one of said ends and free at their opposite ends, and a stop Alier liiniting the closing of the tree ends of the front and back.
3, A holder of the character described, consisting ot' a front, a back, and ends, said. ends having extensions which are bent upon. themselves to provide spring clips, said spring clips having their lower ends bent in- PatentedzAng. 24,1909.
wardly toward the holder to' eoperate thereare bent upon themselves 51nd terminate in 10 with and having their extremities serrated or inner extensions', which are serrated or toothed. toothed.
4. A holder of the character described, In testimony whereof I affix my signature comprising a loop consisting of a front, a in presence of two Witnesses.
back, and ends, the front and back having LEMUEL N. STEWART. [L. s.] extensions which are flared to form guides or Vitnesses:
