resident of thecity of Philadelphia. in the county of ,Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have .inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in-Centrifugal Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
Objects of the present invention are to provide a s iniple, efficient and reliable balanced multiple stage centrifugal pump; to avoid end thrust .and attain high efliciency; to obviate tortuous passages and to provide large open passages having easy bends; and to provide for obtaining the pressure or pressures corresponding to. the different sta-ge or stages.
To these and other ends hereinafter set.y

The nature, characteristic features and scope of the-invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection withthe accompanying drawings forming part hereof and in Whi`ch-' l Figure 1, is a view principally in central section illustrating a I tures the invention. "The impellers 10 and 11 are arran ed backl to back and are shown as provi ed with the usual websor vanes. It will be observedupon' reference to Fig. 1, that the casing is sol arranged as to se arate or isolate the impellers 10 and l1o T is arrangement vinsures the absence of end thrusts on the shaft 1, since it constitutes what may be called a balanced structure in respect to the water pressure, the thrust on one impeller being offset by the equal but opposite thrust on the other. 1-9, 20, 21 and 22 are auxiliary 'intakes of Iwhich those` marked. 19 and '21 communicate respectively with lthe U-shape water ways 'l2 of the parts 5 and (i, and of which those marked 20 and 22 communicate respectively' with the chambers 16 that appertain to the parts 5 and 6. The pump shown has six stagesand when the intakes 19,20, 21 and 22 are closed fluid is delivered at 18 under pressure corresponding with the siX stages.
However, by using the other intakes pro` gressively it is possible to obtain fiuid' at 18 at a; pressure correspond-ing to the -intake that is open.
' As shown the shaft 1 is of largest diamef ter at its left-hand end and use is made of` sleeves 23 which in connection with the Jain nuts 24 serveto hold the iinpellers against end-wise motion and in proper place on the shaft; it being understood that the parts are assembled from right to left. The parts or castings 25 and 28 are separate from the castings 26 and these castings may be readily assembled and separated by means of the 'bolts 27.
In vuse the fluid enters at' 17, is operated upon by the first ofthe iinpellers and reaches the water way 12 which by reason of its shape permits ofthe easy passage of the fluid and delivers itin the direction indicated by the arrows a to the second impeller. The latter delivers it throuo'h the water way 14 and channels 15 as indicated by the arrows Y) and by reason of the shape'of the water way 14 and channels 15 the vpassage of the fluid is comparatively unobstructed. From the chamber 16 the fiuid reaches the next set of apparatus or stage of the pum and the described operation is repeated until finally the fluid escapes at 18.

Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A pump having a casing and impellers arranged back to bacland having an annular Waterway from the outlet of the lirst iinpeller to the inlet of the second impeller, said Waterway having' a cross section of generally helical forni in a plane which contains the axis of the ump, and a Waterway from the outlet ot the second impeller consisting of tubular channels crossing the first mentioned waterway, substantially as specified.
2. A balanced multiple stage centrifugal pump provided with impel-lers arranged back to back in pairs and With a casing having an annular Waterway from the outlet. ofthe first impeller to the inlet of the second iinpellcr, said waterway having a cross section of generally helical form in a plane which contains the axis of the pump, and a second Waterway of large area and easy bends beginning .Within the lirst Waterway and crossingl it through tubular channels and connecting the second impeller of one pair with the first impeller ot' the next pair, substantially as specified.
3. A multiple stage centrifugal pump provided With impellers arranged back to back in pairs, a casing which separates the iinpellers whereby there is insured a maximum of balance and absence of end thrust, said casing having an annular Waterway from the outlet of the first impeller to the inlet of the second impeller, said waterway having a cross-section of general-ly helical 'form in a. plane which contains the axis of the pump, and a second waterway consisting of tubular channels crossing the first mentioned waterway and connecting the outlet of the second iinpeller with the inlet of the lirst inipeller of the next pair, substantially as specified.
