CENTRIFUGAL PUMP ASSEMBLY Filed May '7. 1928 lili/en 40.11. afd/M www j? miv( Fly Patented Jan.` 14, 1930 UNITEDVSTATES PATENT OFFICE ALADAR HOLLANDER, OF BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGN- MENTS, TO BYRON JACKSON PUMP CO., A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE CENTRIFUGAL-PUMP ASSEMBLY Application ined may 7, 192s. serial No. 275,795.
My invention has for its object simple and efficient means of assembling and adjusting the pump parts in a multistage centrifugal pump.
Other objects will appear from the drawing and specifications which follow.
By referring to the drawing, my invention will be made clear.
Fig. v1 is a cross section through a two stage centrifugal pump employing my invention.
Fig. 2 is a detail front view of the diaphragm member of Fig. 1 and at right angles thereto and shown partly in section tobetter illustrate the manner in which the parts are held together.
Fig. 3 is a view of one of the diaphragm halves of Fig. 2 and at right anglesthereto.
Throughout the figures similar numerals refer to identical parts.
A conventional pump shaft is shown by the numeral 1 passing through gland means at 2.
The pump casing is shown at 3, having a suction'passage 4, a primary stage impeller 5, a first pressure compartment 6, which communicates'in a conventional manner with the suction 7, to the second stage impeller 8 from which pressure discharge is delivered through the passage 9, and thence through the pressure discharge outlet at 10.
The impellers 5 and 8 are cast as an integral unit and between them is positioned the diaphragm member consisting of two halves 11, 12 joined along a faced joint 13, and held in alignment by a plurality of dowels as 14, 14.
The two halves 11-12 are preferably first' bolted together and a peripherial cut taken to form a shoulder to seat against a ring seat turned n the casing 3 at 16, the periphery of the assembled diaphragm thus having two diameters corresponding with the casing grooves 16, 17.
the periphery of the diaphragm at 19 into which conically pointed screws 20, 21 are entered from the casing to force the diaphragm against the casing or shoulder seat at 17 by their wedge action.
The casing head 25 is fixed to the casing as There is also a V-shaped groove cut about by screws 26 and the impeller is held in its assembled relation upon the spline 27 of the shaft 1, by the screw 28. l
ealing plug 29 may be `employed to close the screw openings at 20, 21 to prevent leakage.
The operation isas follows:
The casing 3, gland 2 and shaft 1 being fixed in operative position with the spline 21 in place the two diaphragm halves 11, 12 are now assembled, with their dowels 14, between the impellers and impellers 5-8 and assembled diaphragm slipped into place.
The diaphragm now rests against the peripherial seat 16-17 in the casing and the screws 20, 21 are inserted and engage against the sloping sides of the conical groove 19, to force the 'diaphragm against the seat by their wedge action.
` The screw 28 is inserted to secure the impellers in place and the casing head '25 is secured by the bolts 26. The pump is now ready for operation.
It may be djs-assembled by a reversal of the above procedure.
While I have shown and described my invention as particularly adapted to a twostage pump, it may be employedwith pumps having any plurality of stages, and the diaphragm or diaphragms may be divided into more than two parts if desired, and in place of the conical groove 19, conical holes may be provided in the periphery of the assembled diaphragm, Without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I wish to be understood as claiming structures employing my invention in all such variations.
I claim :n
1. In a multi-stage centrifugal pump, of relatively high and low stage fixed together, a pluralityl of integrally formed impellers, a sectionalized diaphragm assembled between adjacent impellers, an integral annular pump casing within which said impellers and said diaphragm are mounted, an annular joint between said casing and said diaphragm and Wedge means between said diaphragm and said casing adapted to hold said joint tight.
2. In a multistage centrifugal pump, a
plurality of imp'ellers of relatively high and low stage integrally formed, a sectionalized diaphragm assembled between said impellers, an integral annular pump casing within y5 which said impellers and said diaphragm are mounted, an annular faced surface in said casing and adapted to support said diaphragm between said surface and the impeller of the higher stage and wedge means 10 between said diaphragm and said casing ada ted to hold said diaphragm against said sur ace. s f
