CENTBIFUGAL PUMP.
Application led October 22, 1925. Serial No. 64,085.
This linvention relates to centrifugal pumps; my object being to provide a pump of simple and eilicient construction and operation wherein a plurality of inidependently acting impellers of the same or varied diameter are operatively` mounted within yseparate volute chambers arranged in a unitary housing or casing. The improved pump is primarily designed for use in connection with the vacuum producing apparatus for steam heating systems disclosed ill. my co-pending application Serial No. 64,086,
. filed October 22,1925, but it is to be underlerred form of my invention.
Fig.. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the pump, as on the line 2v2 of Fig. 1.
Fig.. 3 is a front elevation of the pump, with the ported head removed.
Fig'. 4 is an elevation of said head.
Fig. 5 is a section, as on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is a sectional. detail of one of'the rotors or impellers, and its adj uncts.
Referring to the drawings, 11, 12 designate complemental lower and upper sections constituting a pump housing or casing within which are 'formed in spaced relation to each other two volute chambers 13, 14 having independent outlets 15, 16, respectively.
Extending centrally through the volute chambers is' a power driven shaft 17 on which are mounted to rotate within the respective chambers 13, 14 twov impellers 18, 19 of the single suction or the' double suction type. These impellers may befof the same or different diameters, depending upon the particular service to be performed by the ump. In the present instance impellers of t e slngle -suction typeand of different diameters are illustrated, such impellers being arranged face to face with their central eyes in register with adjacent inlet ports 20, 21 from supply conduits 22, 23, respectively, which are formed in the casin so as .to occupy the space betweenthe wa s of the two chambers. The outlets A15, 16 and supply conduits 22, 23. extend through a flanged atter portion on thelower section 11, and to which flanged portlona suitable coupling head may be bolted, as herein described. If'desired the impellers in'-;t`ead ot' being arranged face to face may be arranged back to back.
In one aspect ofmy invention the inlet conduits between the volute-chambers may be connected respectively-with the separating chamber and the overflow or condensate chamber of a vacuum producing apparat-us tor steam heating systems, as described in co-pending application aforesaid, in
my w lich connection the impellers are of different capacities to meet the relative requirements` of lvolume and pressure; one (16) of lthe outlets being in communication with an ejector which leads to the separating chamber and is in operative connection with the return line from the heating system, and the other outlet (15.) being in communication with a boiler feed-water pipe. In another aspect of my invention, wherein thepump f is employed as, for example, a two stage pump. the outlet (15) of one chamber is connected-with the inlet conduit (23) of the other chamber in such a way that a series operation is performed and the liquid by the `respective pump elements, that is to say,
when liquid is supplied to and is discharged from one volute chamber by the complemental impeller such liquid is delivered to the .supply inletotl the other volute'chamberfand' therein further acted upon by the impeller of the latter preparatory to the final discharge of the liquid. `To this end, the inlet and outlet conduits to and from the respective chambers communicate with a ported head or manifold 24 of suitable character which is appropriately bolted to the flanged portion lowersection of the housing. This head preferabl comprises a body having therein an inta e port 25 leading from a suitable source of liquid supply through pipe 30to the inlet conduit 22; a diagonal or crossover-passage 26 connecting the outlet 15 with 4the inlet 23, and lla ort 27 in registry with the outlet 16. The ort is in communication with a pipe 28 lea ing to a suitable point of discharge. By the construction described it' will be seen that the pump elements are arranged in close relatlon and are directly connected forv series operation in such a manner that an easy` and short flow travel of the liquid or liquids from one element to the other is efaov , the suction portions of the impellers, and
fected. It will also be seen that by the duplex suction and discharge connections described different li nids may be handled at the same or di erent pressures and capacities. If the apparatus be usedin connection with the foamite system the manifold 24 will be omitted, in which case the liquids would be handled separately and finally mix at the end of the discharge line. The manifold 24 is also omitted when the ump is used in connection with a steam eatlngsystem. 1
In the particular construction herein illustrated the hubs of the impellers are mounted in floatin casing rings 29 which serve to prevent leaage ofthe liquid around the shaft 17 upon which the impellers are mounted is supported by bearing brackets 31,which are cast integral with the lower section of the housing. This shaft is protected from the action of the liquid by means of s aced sleeve sections 32 which, encasing'the shaft, are rml pressed against the impellers by means o external lock nuts 33 located beyond the glands 34 of the stuffing boxes 35. The bracket at 'the outboard end of the pump is provided with a combined radial and adjustable thrust bearing 36, and the .bracket at the inboard end is providcd with a radial bearing 37 only; these bearings bein designed for grease'lubrication.
y invention is not limited to the particular structural details herein disclosed, as the construction may be modiiied within the principle ofthe invention and the scope of .the appended claims.
I claim- A 1.*A centrifugal pump comprisin a twopart casing having a plurality o volute igeaaosa chambers therein in spaced relation, central einlet ports' for said chambers, outlets from said chambers, impellers mounted in lsaid chambers on a common axis of rotation and having their eyes in register with said ports,
and supply conduits arranged between and leading respectively to the said inlet ports,
said. s'upply conduits and outlets opening through the casing adjacent to each other and adapted to have a coupling head secured thereto.
2. A-centrifugal ump comprisin a casing having a plura ity' of volute c ambers therein in spaced relation, central inlet ports for said chambers, outlets from said chambers, impellers rotatably mounted in ,said chambers and .having their e 7es in register with said ports, supply con uits arranged between and leading respectively to the said inlet ports, and a head secured to the casing 'having a cross-over connection between the 'casing and havinga cross-over passage bctween the outlet of one chamber and the inlet of another chamber and also sepa-rate ports for the other outlet and inlet conduit.
Signed at the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, this -7th dayof October A. D. 1925.
